My grandad had one, it was at the bottom of the garden and had two holes cut in the wodden bench on top, he used to say it was so he could have company but I later realised it was so that one side could mature while the other was being used. In those days 1950's no-one knew about pathogens so the "mature" product was spread on the garden. As well as all his veg, flowers and fruit I remember he alway grew gigantic strawberries and raspberries but Mum would never eat them!!
