  • They Lied !!!

Last nights weather said it was not going to be anywhere near as cold as it has lately,,,,,,,,,,,,,,They Lied.

I have just done the school run, and the eldests school is a new school a bit out of town so to speak, upon approaching the car park it looked like snow, when I arrived I was greeted by some kids skating in the car park, some pathetic drivers thinking it was funny to skid arround, and about a half inch of solid ice covering the car park and paths leading to the school building.

They could not even be bothered to salt/grit the paths, main roads ie bus routes are gritted daily lately which is a good thing, but surely the schools are as important ?.

just got back in and the temp in the greenhouse is a mere -3.8, but no visable ice.

Now got to drive up to Derby,, Mrs CM will have to do the afternoon run, just hope it has thawed by then.

I will always remember the weatherman (I think it was Michael Fish) saying on an evenings weather forecast,"Someone even phoned the BBC and said there is a hurricane coming. Oh no Mrs xxxx, there's nothing to worry about." Following morning.......

That annoys me. The roads get gritted, but not footpaths or cycle lanes.
But then, everyone drives when it gets cold, don't they?

With my ex-School Admin Officer hat on - it's up to the school to grit their own footpaths and car park. We used to order salt/sand mix every year for this purpose. Anyone hurt if it's not done has a case against the school. I hate the litiginous (is that REALLY a word or did I dream it?) mindset these days but it is in their own interest to make sure their paths and car park are safe.

            Ah ha!
That's why cycle lanes aren't done ... because that's town council responsibility, and not County Highways responsibility.

I remember it well. Was living in Maidstone at the time. I slept right through it and wondered why there were trees down in the garden. My bf picked me up to take me to work and told me about the hurricane and we spent the day driving round kent looking at fallen trees. Never got to work [worked for the highways dept and they shut up shop and sent everyone out to try and sort trees out], so had a free day off.

I was working that fateful night, on duty. About 2 a.m. a window was smashed in the camp, and I had to report it in the occurance book. Following morning I awoke to absolute carnage everywhere, realising my window wasnt really a big deal.
We were then deployed to Brighton to help clear up down there. 5 days in a hotel chopping up trees during the day and drinking heavily at nights, brilliant.

I love the idea of an 'Occurrence book'. I'm going to start one off I think.

I'd love to walk into work each morning and ask 'what's occurring?'...

[sounds like a good idea for a sit com, someone should write that one down].

I feel all young now!!I remember waking up,noticing a tree across the road & being all excited that the school bus wouldn't be able to get through!...We were also 2&1/2 weeks without electricity, mum& dad had just had an oil burner fitted so all our neighbours used to come round for washing/baths & then we'd all go to another neighbour with an aga to have hot dinners.

I slept through it all too! I remember waking up in the morning and thinking 'D*mn it's windy!'

My Mum remembers it - it was her Birthday.

All I remember is seeing on TV that a chimney was taken off the roof in Birmingham. Given that I was in Bolton, that was 'down South' to me. We just got a blustery night. It wasn't until I moved to Surrey and saw all the books and pictures that I realised just how bad it was. The village were my ponies are kept was completely cut off. Both roads leading to it are tree-lined and it took weeks to clear them. Funniest thing in the pics is the cars and clothing of the people. It seems so old!
