We generally have a couple of good holidays in France and took advantage last year of Speed ferries "10 single trips for "240. A bargain, we promptly used 4 up last year and saved the balance for this, only for them to go tits up just before Christmas.

Thankfully I have just converted my £50 worth of Tesco club card vouchers into £200 worth of Eurotunnel vouchers so we at least came good there.

Personally, I prefer the tunnel to the ferries as, fires excepted, it doesnt get affected by the weather, French fishermen blockading ports or much else.

Do you guys prefer the tunnel or the ferries?

Jeannine and I often use the Eurostar, which is usually superb. You can get some great prices if you travel off-peak. I prefer the train when I'm taking the car too - it just seams more efficient somehow.

We did have a nightmare trip recently though; it should take about five hours from our front door to a hotel in Paris, but thanks to a broken train it took 18 hours (including a night on St Pancras Station floor!).
    Resistance is fertile

I love the fact that you can turn up early and if there are spaces free on an earlier train they give you the option as you poll up to check in to go with that rather than waiting.

I must say I cant abide either of them. Le Chunnel is the wrong side of France for me, and the ferries are extortionately expensive.
I am fortunate that my job gives me time off a plenty, so I can choose the best flights etc, but on the rare occasions I come back to UK now, its far far cheaper to get free/v cheap flights and hire a car.
As a point, should anyone be interested, a Supermarket chain in France, SuperU hire cars out at €5 a day, yes thats right, thats not a typo, 5 Euro a day. Free/cheap flights and 5 euro a day car hire.... its the way ahead.

Ferry. Keep on thinking if you are in the Tunnel and there's a leak

The Dartford tunnel gives me the ab-dabs, the very thought of the Channel tunnel makes me claustrophobic. On top of the water every time for me!!

Ferry, short crossing preferably, for me. Not keen on the tunnel (been in it once) as I get slightly claustrophobic!

Fly/drive is okay but how do you get all your French goodies back?

We used to go by ferry (usually Norfolk line, the cheapest) but on one of said trips KK was sooooo ill - actually, so was nearly everyone on the trip. I was just about OK but nearly gave in to the sounds and smells that go with a "dodgy" crossing so it's the Tunnel every time now. I know it costs a bit more but it is much quicker and, as you said, you can usually get an earlier crossing.
So... to answer your question (why use one word when about three thousand will do)

                              Tunnel

ps. You can get 10 ticket deals with the Tunnel too, works out very cheap.
