Hospitals!!! aarrgghhh!!

I have a few disabilities and in 2005 one of my knees gave way, which in turn I hurt my left ankle. I was taken to hospital to be told that it was a sprain, (it didnt look like a sprain and hurt like hell). Dont worry they say 6 months and you will be ok. So 6 months later, still swollen and hurting. Consultant who deals with my knees tells me that it could take longer but he will inject it with steroids to see if that helps - NO it didnt.

Then November 2007, foot specialist tells me he can see on x rays that I have torn cartilage and ligaments, which is also trapped in bone, wants me to have an MRI. He says that I can have MRI on the same day I have my knees done, great me thinks.

Feb 2008, got told there is no info for me to have MRI on ankle, just knees, even tho i kicked up a fuss, they still refused to do it.

May 08 get appointment through a company called speed medical for my ankle MRI, I travel a heck of a long way only to be told the appointment has been cancelled.

July 08 get to finally have MRI on ankle, go to see consultant in September only to be told they cannot find the results!!! I explain how my ankle affects my everyday living......he tells me to pack in gardening - yeah right!!!

New MRI scan November 08, go back TODAY for results, only to be told that because of the length of time passed, there is nothing they can do for me, just got to live with 'it'.

I came home and had a good cry, would have had a cig if I werent giving up.

Oh hun, that's awful, just awful You should do something about it, it sounds like serious negligence by several departments.

I would defo write a letter of complaint stating all the facts as above, if you have a good GP speak to them and see if you can get a second opinion. I have hypermobility and had problems with constant sprains and then dislocations of my ankle, it wasn't until I had to go to A and E after it needed manipulating into place that something got done an I got referred to a hospital in Glasgow, our hospital didn't want to touch it, the consultant there said he'd only this twice in his career, and lets just say he wasn't at the beginning of his career. Op happened after much discussion with my consultant and colleagues, as its a six month plus recovery and no guarantees as to how long it will help for, thankfully nearly 2 years on not sprained or dislocated it once even if it only lasts 5 years it 5 years without injury, every 2 months before the op

Point is the damage to my ligaments started 20 years ago when I sprained it aged 19.. and it got fixed two years ago.. I know it may not be the same type of injury but I'd try again

I would write a letter of complaint about the whole thing, and ask for a second opinion. That bunch don't sound competent.

Big hugs to you. This is awful, do try and get a second (and third if you have to) opinion. I think there must be something that can be done. If it was the Queen would she be sent away like that? I think not.

Hmmm. I really hope you get it sorted.

I've seen a lot of 'specialists' over the years about my b0ggered back/neck. I saw 6 doctors, and got 6 different opinions, ranging from additional surgery (no thanks) to prescribing St Johns Wort or epilepsy pills.

Nothing worked. I just have to live with the pain and restricted movement.

Sorry ti hear about that I would go back to your GP and write to the hospital. My OH has been waiting for 16 monts for an Mri scan the hospital phoned last week to see if he still wanted it. Course he flipping well does. My bil ( nice one lol ) has just had an operation on his shoulder at a private hospital because the nhs one lost his notes and because it had been a while they offered him an appointment so he didnt have to pay. He has now had operations on both shoulders in the private sector paid for by the nhs because they messed up.

That's just downright disgusting . You should make a HUGE fuss! As Marthaclematis said, get one or two more opinions - they can't just leave you like this can they?

It would appear ineptitude isn't that uncommon...

These are sentences actually typed by Medical secretaries in NHS Greater Glasgow

Not meant to I know but those statements made me laugh heywayne.
When my mum was in hospital whoever wrote her note couldnt spell so the other staff thought she had written something about mums heart when in fact it was her diet so no wonder she wasnt getting any better, luckily for her she had us to make sure she was ok and as soon as we spotted the mistake hey presto mum got better.
