Heywayne you can do conference calls over the phone these days and look at things like go to my PC ect you can network pcs at the same time ect ect - the options are there but not necessarily as attractive or practical.

The courses I run in Sweden for example see peeps needing to fly out there - but hopefully we teach enough 'conservation' thinking to offset the flights - If one person goes from us and does something good or we save one live then to a greater or lesser extent its worth it. Even to climb the highest mountain you still have to start with one step at a time!

The problem with green issues - same as Animal rights and such is somewhere someone is always going to be the loser - the greater majority of the planet is now man made or man adapted - as such everything has a knock on effect ............. population expansion means sooner or later someones going to have to be displaced ........

The mink that were freed in the new forest killed thousands of local creatures and devistated the local eco system which the foresters ect keep in careful balance for the benefit of all the wildlife but Im sure the animal rights peeps thought they did a good job putting the rights of the mink over the rights of all the native local species - take the airport expantion it might mean x amount of people get jobs while Y amount lose theres swings and round abouts - said in my book its all in the name of progress but progress to me never seems to be that? ............ pollution wise this government doesnt has a green bone in its body its just another chance to tax people and if you complain about it your a bad person who doesnt care about the planet ........

The problem we face is what comes around goes around and a solution today creates a problem for tomorrow - the greatest mistake our species made (towards the planet anyway) was moving on from being hunter gatherers!

End of the day Nature has a good way of restoring the balance and in the short term that day will come when the gulf stream finally stops - then we can make all heathrows runways into extra long ice rinks .....................as we wont need em for landing planes ........

I understand the point Gary, but with due respect it's hard enough understanding what's being said round a table that includes English, French, Italian, Swedish, German, Austrian, Belgian, Russian, Czech delegates - without the required visuals, samples etc that are often part of the meetings I attend.

      Point taken though.

The recent changes in planning laws mean that along with the permissions come a whole new set of powers

It is possible that the consent could say that Greenpeace deliberately and friviously tried to interfere with the procedures. They could then say that the compulsary purchase order is made against Greenpeace and it's up to greenpeace to componsate the individual buyers of the plots of land.

I don't live near Heathrow and never will so I'm not particulary bothered as for the pollution, I can't stop people flying.

I don't travel by plane, and it's very unlikely I ever will, so it's not me who's driving the need

Small point here people . Ask any business person how valuable face to face meetings are over conference calls and webcams and the answer will more than probably be a the face to face meeting.
Any way which is the more ethical a business class ticket which is full rate or a cheap £10 /flight to Spain ?I'd say the business ticket leaves enough profit to offset carbon emissions if the air company so desired . How much of a cheap £10 to Spain ticket can be used to offset carbon emissions?
It's not the business user that needs to be punished rather the hoardes that go for the cheap holidays .

I'm allready out the door so don't bother throwing the saucepan at me - you'll miss

Have just looked at the Government petitions page and Heathrow does not appear in either the five newest or most popular petitions.
Mind you I have previously added my name to several petitions and eventually received a carefully reasoned explanation from the government explaining why I was wrong and they are going to go ahead and do whatever it was in any case.

True, particularly the 1p flight nonsense. Increase the price and you'll cut the demand.

Airlines offer these rates so that they can keep their "slot"ie they can land a plane at a certain time at a certain airport . All the time they are trying to sell this prime time slot to the highest bidder.Cut that out and you would free up a lot of capacity.

Same thing happening herr in Dublin. Airport extending against the peoples wishes, but who listens?

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.

Unfortunately people have got used to being able to go where they like, when they like. It is really difficult if your job relies on travel and i have a friend who would agree with Wayne it is less than a perk. One idea i saw was that every person was issued with so many carbon miles for travel, once you had used those up you couldn't travel by air until you had accumalated more. Would stop people just hopping on planes at the drop of a hat i suppose. As far as the runway goes, again just another case of short term thinking by a government who doesn't either want to or can see the long term implications of its policies. On one hand they are telling us to recycle, cut our carbon footprint, be green and then they give the go ahead for expansion of one of the biggest polluting things on the planet. Those poor folk affected by the build and when its open the flight path really bad.
