  • Stones

The question is ' Do stones multiply' Everytime I dig I take out stones, then I go to the shed to make a cup of what cheers, return to my dig and there are more stones on the surface. I am sure the stones as well as weeds grow when it rains, because the surface I have finely tilled has stones on it when there weren't any before. Am I paranoid or am I stoned.

    Well.. hopefully not stoned bootie

Nope mine seem to multiply in my garden. Well, actually broken bits of plate seem to mulitply the most. I wish I'd kept all the bits now, I expect I could make a lovely collage

I wouldn't take them all out Bootie for the following reasons
      1. The soil under a stone is always moist
      2. They help wth drainage
      3. I'm an idle git

Stones will eventually work their way to the surface - don't ask me how they do it, they just do ! Just keep raking them off - you will win eventually!

The second its only the 'biggish ones' ones im getting out
The third reason I never knew that!

Hello Bootie, yes stones do work their way to the surface and on that kind of ground I don't think you ever get to the end of them. On the other hand, they don't do any harm and are probably beneficial. A previous garden I had was very stoney but it was very fertile. I think you'll just have to learn to love your stones.

The upside of stones are:-they hold the heat.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

They are often put around the base of vines on the continent, I think to reflect light onto the grapes and hold the heat.
