3 guys go to a motel. The receptionist says the room costs £30. They each give £10. A little later, the receptionist realises that the room was actually £25. She calls the bell hop and sends him off with £5 for the guys in the room
On the way, the bell hop wonders how he'll split the £5 between the 3 of them. He decides to give each guy £1 and keep £2. Therefore each of the 3 guys payed £9 for the room; that makes a total of £27. Add the £2 kept by the bell hop to the £27; that makes £29. What happened to the other £1?

You can get all sorts of funny sums by adding things that should be subtracted......

Hotel gets £25, bell hop gets £2, guests actually pay £27.........
