To get rid of gunge on sores diluted hydrogen peroxide will disinfect it and remove the manky stuff.
It'll froth up, but will certainly remove the surface pus.

Really hope you've been to a Dr or at the very least a pharmacist, Lynda. Green gunge is most definitely pus. Keep it clean (bathe twice daily in saline if you have nothing else) and if you're not out and about, keep it open to drain. Is it right on the knee? Anything on/near a joint should get swifter attention, as once an infection sets in at the joint site, it's more difficult to treat due to the poor blood supply. If you do choose the H2O2 route, make sure no-one else is around. Swearing will most surely follow!
