I stopped drinking Cabenet Sauvignon and started drinking red grape juice at 79p a litre fom Tesco's! Still use a wine glass, but don't fall over and any illusion I had that wine was good for me is fullfilled with the grape juice. I've also started drinking pints of water with a dash of lime in it for some reason.....probably that it drowns the taste of chlorine in the tap water!

Can giving up lager still be used in this thread ??.

I have on average between 4 and 8 cans of Carlsberg Export a night,, would like to cut down but then think whats the point,, we are all going to die one day whether through natural causes or dead livers.

      Seriously I would like to stop, but;

1, I only drink at home.
2, I limit myself to the above quantity religously.
      3,
4, What else is there to do.
5, I have worked by butt off all day, (Sometimes all night aswell) just so we can live, why not.

BUT I do know that it is a waste of money, I do know it is bad for me. I do know that I am a fat G*t for it, But why should I stop ?,,,,,,,,,answers on a postcard please

You could always go on the 'Men Behaving Badly' lager diet!

Yes, but you could see your old age out in very good health, or by dying a lingering horrible death from liver failure, or heart failure. It won't necessarily be sudden or painless

It sounds like you're drinking from boredom? Not from pleasure?
          So what's the point?

OOOOhhh I would love not to drink but I like it too much. I have cut down though since before Christmas - all during last summer (actually from May to September) I would get home from work and dh and I would have a bottle of Cava in the garden - then we'd come indoors and drink a bottle of red. We did stop that and this year we're just going to have one bottle in the garden and not another with dinner. I think giving up smoking has helped me cut down because I always had to have another glass if I had a ciggie on the go. I am going to try not to drink MON/TUE/WED/ Thursday will be a 'maybe' as I don't work Fridays and so Thursday is my last working day. I always have a drink at the weekend, either Friday or Saturday and always on Sunday with lunch. I know it doesn't seem like I'm depriving myself much but when compared to last year when I had a bottle of wine every night I think its a positive start. And Lynda, big respect to you, I admire the way you've turned your life around.

Dh had a job interview today and asked are we celebrating (he hasn't got the job yet!) but thanks to coming across this thread I said 'no thanks', not till Thursday (maybe even Friday!).

It was lovely to have been quoted at the beginning of this thread, however, I fell off the waggon after eight days! No willpower, sorry.

OH opened a bottle of Port and I caved in. Then a glass of red with dinner and back to the old habits. I always finish a bottle, it's not in my nature to put the cork back in lol. I have always drunk loads, my parents have always done so, so I guess I just picked it up (my Sister is the same).

I have stopped drinking during the week now, and will try to stick to one glass with dinner at the weekend, because we usually have a roast, and it just goes with it so well. This weekend I felt tipsy on one glass of wine, which was good, because it proves that abstaining during the week has got it out of my system.

Having had two weekends with no alcohol, then one with a fair bit, I have noticed how bloated and lethargic I feel when I drink. That and the cost; G&T during the week and 4 bottles of red at the weekend adds up to quite a bit!

Glutton, Eight Days is great! I can honestly say I haven't gone eight days without a drink since I was eighteen. If I could do that I'd give myself a medal. Just keep on cutting down, that's what I'm going to do.

I can't abide wine, red white, rose - yuk! But chocolate is a different matter!! ...and I have a partner who can have a bar of chocolate, eat ONE piece and then leave it on the side for a further three days and then eat just ONE piece again. I sit there staring at it like a whimpering dog, with him saying - leave!! That's not normal, that is no way normal - one piece - what's that about??

Most of you know, I don't drink, but I very rarely explain why. Well, the reason is that I have lived with the effects of somebody else's drinking. I'm not going into the ins and outs, but I will say that I HATE the culture of drinking in this country. It makes it seem like it's all fun, it'll make you feel better, it'll help you sleep,it's what 'normal' people do...

What rarely gets talked about is the fact that alcohol is a depressant - it makes you depressed! Sleep brought on by alcohol isn't proper sleep, you will wake up still tired.

Regularly drinking over the recommended daily amount can make your body dependant on it, and not drinking can leave you feeling withdrawal symptoms which include; shakes, headaches, nausea, heart palpitations, panic attacks, nervousness, irritibility, insommnia, paranoia... You're also more at risk of developing cancers such as oeshophogeal, stomach, bowel, liver etc.

Anyway, I'm really glad to see some of you knocking it on the head altogether, or cutting down a lot, it's definitely the right thing to do. And a much better example for your kids if you have any.
Good luck to you all, and if you want a bit of scaremongering to get you back on track, I'm your lady

I`m the same, my OH can get through 3 bottles of red wine a night, or a bottle of whisky. If I say anything it makes it worse so I try to stay out of the way.
He can be a nasty piece of work if you annoy him and I don`t ever want to be like that so I haven`t had a drink in over 5 years and it doesn`t bother me.
Best of luck to all of you that are cutting down, just think of all the things you can buy for the garden with the money you`ll save.

Yes, I've discovered that! I sleep badly anyway because of my back, but if I've had a drink, even one glass, I wake up at 3am parched

The Tesco delivery's just come, and normally I'd break open a celebratory beer ... but it was surprisingly easy to have an orange juice & tonic instead
