It's certainly woodworm- the builder showed me a piccie of the lavae and adult- and yes...I never knew there was more than one type of woodworm! The holes are about 1/2cm in diameter- I think I have a photo of the grub my OH managed to prize out of the wood.
Moisture? well- the beam had been repaired about 70 years ago with a metal brace...and between WWII and 1980's the property had been left to rot- so I bet the roof must have leaked!
DWB...hmm- I was worried about that at first, but the builder said it's definitely not- oval holes as you say!
And yes- the whole of that part of the house needs treating before the end of April as that's when any adults will fly!( probably the rest of the house with younger timbers!)
You can get 30litre barrels of the treatment fluid to spray on....goodness knows what that will cost - cos 5litres costs about E38
(cheaper than replacing the wood though eh??)
As I said- it was an expected job
I'll check if there's a photo in Picasa.....
Them's mighty big woodworm! (I don't think we get them that big here). If you treat before adults fly, you kill the emerging adults (poisoned when they munch their way out through the treated surface), and hopefully leave no untreated surfaces for outside adults to lay eggs on. The thing about moisture is that if timber is really dry, the woodworm (even DWB) cannot really cope with it (not sure whether it is too hard for them to munch, or simply that they get dehydrated from trying). If spraying the treatment fluid on, wear a good mask. It's nasty stuff! I don't think it was that expensive when we bought a 'dual purpose' treatment in Spain, for woodworm AND termites! We ended up pouring some into the gaps where the roof beams had got soaked when the roof was more holes than tiles. So far, no recurrence of trouble....Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Catch em and pull their teeth out Nico's .There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.
