        I'm going to be a grumpy old biddy (again - so what's new!) and say that it depends VERY MUCH on the age of the plant, the time of harvest, the growing conditions and much more, as to how much active ingreient is present. Most people will underdose - because they taste foul - but the potential for harming yourself is fairly high. However, if he's just going to make hop pillows (add a bit of lavender, lad!) he can't do much harm. Most culinary herbs - mint, dill and the like - are good for digestion so the principles are sound. However, a LITTLE learning is a dangerous thing.

          If you want to grow your own, my advice would be to buy 'Herbal Drugs and Phytopharmaceuticals'. I managed to get it really cheap on t'internet and it's an absolute bible of what plant does what. It tells you which part of the plant, age, what chemicals are present to give it such properties, how to make tinctures, ointments...it even references Chemistry papers (if you're REALLY bored, lol!).

          I agree with Flum, though, a little knowledge and all that. Even with my Biochemistry background I stick to ones I know and in quantities I know are safe.

            Flum, will take your advice and watch what they say on the progeramme.
            Am assuming the date and time of airing are not finalised yet.?

            And when your back stops aching,
            And your hands begin to harden.
            You will find yourself a partner,
            In the glory of the garden.

                  Me too;
                  Lavender & chamomile for baths and sachets to aid sleep.
                  Thyme makes a tea/gargle for sore throats, and in the bath (with salt) as an anti bacterial agent.
                  Fennel for the digestive system, and for a kidney detox along with regular drinks of cooled boiled water.
                  Mint for indigestion.

                  I'll try and remember to watch this programme, or catch it on the iPlayer

                      Saw a trailer last night. It looks so up my street. Looking forward to it very much.

                            Looks interesting, plus the presenter looks totally relaxed and chilled, obviously taking what he is prescribing!!

                              I really enjoyed this, thanks for the heads-up Wayne.

                              I want a hop pillow - not for me but for one of my kittens that will not stop waking up every two hours during the night and jumping on me, clawing me and generally being a bad 'un
