We've got 3 sheds(sounds greedy but one and a half is now chook coop),but we've not paid anymore than twenty quid for any of them...the last one had a dozen eggs thrown into the bargain.
I'd personnally make an initial offer of £20 or £25,then if he's not happy with it you can maybe go higher.
As others have said,it's often policy that when you take on a plot whatever is left behind becomes yours anyway.
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx

I'm in agreement with the 'why pay' approach...if he's built it himself then he's probably paid very little for the materials...if anything. It would probably fall down if he tried to move it. He'd probably make a profit even with £50 offer.

If it was a proper bought in shed, I might make a suitable offer, but a hand built one??? How do you even know it is safe to use?

are you sure he built himself and didnt inherit it from previous owner who left it and is trying to make a quick buck
i wouldnt offer him anything as other people have said its on your land now he should have sorted it before you moved on
i have got to clear my stuff off old allotment on to new one and i have a week to do so if there is anything left it goes to new owner thats just how it is

                An idea!!!!!

..why not ask the neighbours on the lottie how much you should offer???
Then if he questions your offer- you can say that's what the other 'experienced' gardener suggested!!!!

I bet there'll be a few working down there over the weekend ,or even today if the weather is OK!

That way you'll also be introducing yourself!

I would say £50 would be fair.

Can I just update you, as it didn't go very well...

I offered initially £50.00, and he snorted and told me that wouldn't 'cover the cost of a quarter of the materials' and 'then there's my time.' Nice guy.

I was achingly polite as ever, and asked him what he wanted then and he said he was too busy now, and he would let me know. He then reeled off his memorised B&Q receipt (he was SO expecting my call) and told me how amazing the shed is and if we buy a new one it'll get broken into etc.

Anyhoo. He didn't call back yesterday, I left it that we would hopefully be able to meet somewhere in the middle, but otherwise, he 'knows someone who wants it' but equally doesn't want the hassle of moving it.

Not a nice 'phone call really - Mr R's talking to him next time - and we're REALLY tempted to ask him to take it then, but it's kind of cutting off our noses. We think he's now busily preparing an invoice, with his hourly rate, costs of materials, etc. backed up with receipts. After speaking with him, I'm not joking!

We (privately) said we'd go to about £125.00, but we fully expect him to come back asking over £200.00.

                        Blimey. People, eh?

                          You're just far too nice.

I truly admire people who can hold off venting their spleen at people.

I hope Mr R can talk him round. Presumable he made it to use, not to sell on?

Tell him you've seen a buy it now shed on ebay for £80 and are buying it and picking it up this week, and putting it up on say, Thursday - Friday - so his needs to be gone by Wednesday or you're burning it.

i would tell him to move it then, and give him a date to move it by ie tomorrow ..... call his bluff ..... you can get a decent shed for £125 or less if you look on ebay ..... and he sounds like he's definitely trying it on with the 'newbie' ........ sounds like he's banking on you caving in .... it may have cost him X amount, but now all it is is a second hand shed.

                                What a lovely sounding chap!
How long ago did he officially vacate the plot? Are there no rules as to how long he's got to remove his belongings?...Maybe you should have a chat with the secretary.
I don't know why he gave up his plot, but could it be he feels some resentment that he couldn't carry on with it for whatever reasons & is just being stubborn about saying goodbye to all the work he'd put into it...doesn't excuse his rudeness, but maybe helps you not to take it personally...I know a phonecall like that would get me down
Have you chatted to other plotholders about it/what they think it's worth? The majority of plotholders on our site are genuinely nice guys that'd be only to pleased to leave stuff if they knew it was going to be of use to the next occupants, but we also have our fair share of those that would probably be just like him.
Have yourself a cuppa...flick through Freecycle/ads in the local paper & get back to him with a phonecall that you've found an alternative shed & that if he's unprepared to accept your offer then he needs to have it taken away in the next two days so you can put up your new one!(hopefully he'll see sense & let you keep it)
Just don't let this one setback spoil your excitement of having your new plot!x
