  • Tomato power

This is what interrupted me from taking part early on in last night's chat & Gabbly chat.

This clock has been running for over 22 hours now. We bought "Lemon Clock" kit from Maplins.

The things the wires are attached to are electrodes - the kit comes with a range of them, I was using magnesium, brass, copper and zinc (I think order matters, though I haven't stated them in circuit order). There are 20 experiments listed in the manual. Good value for £8 I think it was. The Science Museum do a Potato Clock - same sort of thing I think.
There's probably a chemical explanation - ah ha = wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standar...rode_potential though this is still a little technical - it was GSCE/O level standard about 20 years ago.

Update - although the clock was still "ticking" the tomatoes had acquired moulds of some sort or other, so they went into the bin. Have restarted clock now with potatoes - they'll probably "last" longer.

When my husband was teaching physics we always had one - they are great fun and you can try all manners of fruit and veg. Bananas I seem to remember work very well. They are always a talking point!
