  • What an Absolute Waste of Time....

    Aploogies, this is a rant....

I had a hospital appointment this morning. The doctor told me before I had the pin removed 2 weeks ago, that this appt would be to Xray my ankle and make sure nothing had moved. So we got there half an hour+ early, so we wouldn't hold the appointments up waiting for Xrays...
But no. Apparently I didn't have 'Xray' on my notes. So the nurse went in to ask, and was told no, he didn't want one doing... So we sat there for nearly an hour, and then got called into a little side room with bed and I strpiied ogg the 'ski-boot'. Dr comes in after 10 mins, looks at wound 'hmmmm, yes', tells the nurse the stitches need a snip at the end, then stands up straight and says "OK, in one year you might have some trouble with the plates and we'll have to take them out. Now, 2 weeks putting 35% weight down on the front of foot, then 2 weeks of 50% through the whole foot, and you should be ok" and walks out!!! That was it!!!
I'm gutted, I was expecting to be referred for physio, not to mention this xray not happening. How do they know there's no problems? Why did he tell me it'd need xrays 2 weeks ago and then not do them?
And how the hell am I supposed to get myself fit to walk with no physio exercises? They do know that I'm hypermobile, they do know that using the crutches makes my wrists/shoulders/back/left hip/left knee hurt quite a lot because I've told them, and that I've been so house/chair bound.

I'm really upset (in case you hadn't guessed ) and wondering how I'm going to get myself fit to walk without causing damage in other places...

And to top it off, my OH is in the queue to be axe-murdered, he knows how desperate I am to get stuff done but keeps 'having a little nap' whenever there's no house stuff to be done, blaming it on insommnia. But I can't do anything towards cleaning out the greenhouse/sorting out seed spuds/cleaning out pots without someone carrying things! I can just get out there, and then stand looking at it

Off for a good cry now. Then pick myself up and carry on again before the kids get back from scholl.

Poor you, sounds like a nightmare of a day
Second Opinion springs to mind? After all this time you must need physio and an xray - just seems like common sense??

As for the OH, I can't help you there, mines pretty badly behaved too when it comes to having random naps

      Hugs to you

go and see your gp tomorrow, tell him you aren't happy, and that you want a second opinion, as you don't think the doctor was right, he should be able to get you seen by someone else, to get the help you ACTUALLY need

big hugsssssss sweetie, hope you get sorted soon, *kicks Jez up the bum*

Deffo grumble to the doc. Madmax's dad broke his foot a couple of years ago and couldn't use crutches as his upper body wasn't strong enough. When the plaster came off I couldn't believe that they never sent him for physio to 'bully' him back into walking. Result? Father in law can't walk more than a few yards any more due to muscle wastage!!

You rant Sarz - and rant loudly

Deffinatly go see your gp and ask for a second opinion, its easy afterwards to think about what you should have done while there, you do need physio you cant do it alone, can you ring the physio department and ask for their opinion. Good luck with it hope you will feel better in your self soon.

              What she said!
And definitely absolutely go back to your GP, to ask for second opinion. He/she should also be able to refer you for physio

                Watery chuckles @ Zazen.

Thanks girls, I'll ring for a GP appt. Although that'll be a 3 week wait unless I pretend it's an emergency!

It's my own fault I'm so disappointed, I think I build it up in my head beforehand like he's going to wave a magic wand and I'll come out running. But that was a new low in lack of conversation or actual doctoring... He didn't ask if i could move it or anything

Can tell I was upset, my spelling's all to pot, incl the title!

Don't you feel let down when this happens? I'm with the GP brigade. Go and have a danm good complain - otherwise they won't know there are problems with the people they are referring you to.

SarzWix, it's not your fault you're disappointed - you'd been told this visit would be for an X-ray.

I agree too with the others who said see your GP - and when you do, make the absolute 'worst' of the situation - I think drs mentally cut your symptoms in half, as they believe patients exaggerate. As Flummery says, if you don't tell them, they won't know there are probs.

Go and have a good moan to your GP and get him to refer you.

                          *hugs*

totally understand where you're coming from. I smashed my ankle up a few years ago and was non-weight-bearing for 3-4 months (and virtually housebound too). Doctors barely told me anything at any of my appointments (I found out most of it from the internet!), and I got *no* physio/help or even advice either. Didn't even have a 'interim' period with a 'boot' Just got told 'right start walking on it' from 4 months in a cast!

The only real advice I can give is to set yourself targets each day. I found walking barefoot in the house fairly easy but outside, stairs and uneven surfaces a nightmare. I set myself short distances to do each day, increasing slightly each time. I got myself to not get the OH to pick up groceries like milk so I had a purpose to the walk!

If you're using both crutches at the moment switch to one crutch first (in the hand opposite the duff leg) - it takes the weight off your shoulders and helps you walk 'properly' but limits the weight on the foot.

If you need to rant or some sympathy please feel free to PM me

Have you got a rucksack?? That a bottles/thermos for water/tea are the most valuable things ever with a broken leg!
