Yes, I remember the orange juice and malt. Yum.

My mother also doled out sulphar and treacle to clear out your system, with the odd spoonful of Syrup of Figs. Cripes I've got the gripes thinking about it.

She dosed all 4 of us at the same time and we only had 1 toilet
      Oh happy days

Must admit, loved Virol. Seem to remember being scared of the orange juice though, think it was the strange colour

I remember the malt extract, I used to love it. I've to buy it several times in recent years but it's just not the same

Rosehip wine is really good - like a dry sherry! (It is when I make it, anyway - don't like sweet wine.)

I rather liked Virol too. Malt extract these days doesn't contain the cod-liver oil - unless you are making malt loaf, in which case you will find the only ancient chemist's shop that still has a stock of Virol!

I did find myself wondering why we needed all this stuff to keep us healthy, but thinking back, until I was 3 there was still rationing. At least kids today CAN have a good diet. Not that they always do. There seems to be a middle generation who don't know what real food is and don't care enough to find out. Scary (not you dear!) to think they could all go first and the healthy grannies and grandads will be left to sort out the mess of their overweight grandchildren. Oooh I'm rambling this morning!

Yes. I remember the NHS orange juice in the medecine bottle. It was widely used as an everyday drink, when diluted, by lots of people, not just children, before the vast selection of squashes and cordials we have now came on the market. I think it was cheaper than commercial drinks, too
                    I also liked malt extract
I remember at primary school we used to get a day off to go out collecting rose hips, then brought them back to school for collection. Schools all over the country did this as it was a good source of vitamin C

Don't remember the orange juice but I do remember the school milk (hated it, it was always sickly & thick!), the rosehip syrup, malt extract & liberty bodices!

Yes - I was only thinking of it the other day when I had to have a tooth out. You were meant to dilute it with water, but when my Mum was busy with the other children I'd take sneaky swigs straight from the bottle. I think the label was blue.

......and the Virol (loved it!), the rose-hip syrup, cod-liver oil and the Liberty bodices with rubber buttons, and the smell of the clinic....horrid methylated spirit, and the baby scales and being pushed in the old black twin pushchair with the apron in the dark and usually the rain, for miles.......oh the memories....(so now we know how old everyone is!)

Pear Drops that smelt of Acetone...I wonder if that got me in to sniffing glue....oh what fun.

                            Do people still snif glue?

Ah, liberty bodices. My ex asked me once why they had loops on the bottom!! He'd been made to wear his sisters hand-me-downs. The loops? they were for stockings .

NHS (and before that) orange and rosehip syrup. My Dad (a doctor) wouldn't let us drink it. He said they had far too much sugar and would rot our teeth. I thank God to this day for his foresight. We had Haliborange tablets.

He was heavily into healthy eating, we were forced (ahem, sorry "encouraged" ) to eat offal, strange parts of fish, spinach, eggs and fresh fruit and veg from the garden. We were show*/*sed as slave labour to freeze and store produce grown in the garden.

This eventually lead to me actually loving growing things, probably to do with me doing the growing (fun part) then the harvesting the results with a sense of pride. Rather than being forced to harvest the results of someone elses growing endeavors.
