Went to the council allotment regeneration meeting last night (I know i need to get a life)

One of the items on the agenda was the total number of people on the waiting list in Leeds (over 1000) , next item was about having leaflets printed to promote allotments

So asks me why are you going to the expense of having leaflets printed when you cant offer people an allotment anyway?

Because, says the man from the council, at least we can send them a leaflet..

dunno how much, council will be paying (more waste of our council tax) the 1000 plus waiting list is throughout leeds

Welll...if the waiting list goes up to 2,000 then they'll HAVE to create new sites...might be a good thing in the end!!

is that true Nicos, because a few (self managed) sites were talking of closing their waiting lists as they are just so big, it would better to keep them open if thats the case

I'm sure I've heard they are obliged to create new sites...something I read on here a while back.
Might be worth looking in to....esp as it's supposed to be the countries most growing hobby ( no pun intended)

Unfortunately the laws requiring councils to make allotments, have no sanctions if they do not.

Result, councils can toss you aside with impunity as whilst they ARE legally obliged to provide allotments, but do NOT get punished if they dont.

OK...so I'm glad I han't dreamed that one up piglet!!!

I don't think it would look good in the local paper if there were 2,000 peeps waiting for a lottie ...and although obliged to provide new sites that nothing was in fact being done.
In fact 1,000 waiting is appalling.
When are the next batch of council elections???...this May????...interesting!

I thought it was as low as 6 local people asking for an allotment that meant they had a duty to provide them...but maybe I just dreamt that one

It is as low as 6, but as Pigletwillie says, there is no one who enforces the law, even the chap at the council said that to us at our last meeting. He actually said there was a lot of things that councils are supposed to do by law, which they don't usually for financial reasons, and no sanctions are imposed.
Our hopes of a new site have just taken a nose dive. The landowner we were hoping would lease to the council has family problems, and is unwilling to make any decisions at the moment, so we are back to hunting for land .

the ironic thing is that only half our site is cultivated the other half has been left for over 15years and needs a full blown clearance (full of brambles as thick as trees and being used for dumping stuff ) it needs fencing etc to bring it back into use and every year the council promises but never comes through with the cash (no suprise there) it is easily another 30/35 plots size

It would be better if the leaflets gave advice to those who couldbn't get allotments, on how to force the Councils to supply them!

If there are NO allotments in a Parish, or Councils jurisdictaion and six people request allotments then they have to provide them. There the story ends. Once there are allotments for the first six then its game over for the 1000 - 2000 they can go on the waiting list for ever. LB Bromley had a 13 year waiting list a few years ago.
