  • Do I risk pregnancy?

There is a thug of a very large mog in our neighbourhood - he is full and intacto (), he got into my neighbour's house and now her 7 month-old house (!) cat is preggers

Gawd!! I wanted to start letting the girls out this weekend but am concerned for their, erm, safety. True they aren't able, at four months-old, but as they are rescue their age isn't guaranteed.

    Should I:
    a) keep 'em in until they are 'safe'
    b) make them chastity belts
    c) take two bricks to intacto thug

Go with the bricks Piskie - one each side of his head clapped together hard sure solve the problem

I do not actually condone cruelty to animals - honest. Any chance of getting his owner to have him 'done'?

Put them on leads in the garden.
My daughter has a female kitten- 5 months old and she was mewing and calling for a couple of days a couple of weeks ago.
A pegnancy at their age wouldn't be good for them...they'd be stunted as adults as they too are still growing.
The cat opposite us has had 2 litters before she was 18 months old - and finally she's been 'done' .
Seem to use the birth control pill out here rather that surgery....seems daft to me!

      But that'd be another alternative.

...I thought you were going to ask about you!!!!!

...just a thought...can you try and trap him- and have him 'done'- would be a service to all thecats...and gardeners- bet his wee markings stink!

I honestly believe it is bad form to not have a cat 'seen to' but I guess it's a free country and you can't make the owner - but I would really like to be able to

I asked SD if he could pull rank somehow - he said 'I have a hockey stick upstairs, I'll look the other way'

                i thought that too

never heard of the pill for cats Nicos, wonder how effective it is?

i'd be cautious Piskie if he's 'rearing to go' he might try with your girls and at best frighten them but at worse injure them, unneurtered toms are not very polite.

Unless you are a breeder it is a must for all cats to be neutered or spade. It is very iresponsible of anyone not to.

Piskie I guess you will be in the garden with them for the first time so I would go ahead and take them out, you will be able to frighten the big boy away.

Do you know whose cat it is? Seems reasonable to ask to have him done, less spraying everwhere and less kittens to find homes for all over!

I would keep your girls in til they've been done, ours were done early as one of the girls came on heat at about 4 months which the vet said was quite unusual so we had them done then. Not worth the risk as can't guarantee the ages.

Piskie - if you want to let your girls have a litter when they're a little older you can stop the first and/or second seasons with a contraceptive. I did this with my Sophia as I wanted her to have a good summer in the sun before being tied down to motherhood!

As it happens when I did take her off the pill she didn't conceive on her first season - her 'intended' was out of practice I think. He was successful next time round and she had just 2 kittens which made the decision to keep both easy!

I think the pill was called something like ovarid and as she is so small only needed half a tablet per week to keep oestrus at bay. Your vet should be able to supply without a problem - provided it is being done for the best reasons and certainly not for long term use.

4 months is a litle early for the onset of a first season - but as you can see from your neighbour's experience - the local Tom got to her kitty anyway. I had one cat many years ago who was just 9mths old when she conceived and I've always regretted that she must have met her 'husband' without ever showing signs of a season - mewling and strange cavortings. Hence I was so certain that Sophia would have her summer of freedom when still a kitten.

All have now been neutered as I am dead against irresponsible breeding. I think the earliest they'll 'do' them is around 6mths.

Can you have prosthetics made for your girls that are bigger than his? Failing that, get yerself a pair of welders gauntlets, a scalpel and an elastic band.

I think I'd go with the bricks (mind your thumbs) or see if you can speak to the owner, explain the problem and ask them to get him done. In the meantime, I think it's probably best for the kittens to stay inside unless you're out there with them. Owners of un-neutered moggies really are very irresponsible, just see how many cats are needing to be re-homed because of it!
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

One of my cats never showed signs of being in season, although she didn't have kittens until she was 2 years old. It worked in our favour as the tom we had needed to mature a bit before he was capable anyway.
His reaction was the only way we knew she was getting close, so we'd keep her in as soon as he started showing interest and she started beating him up because it was too soon.
The breed tends to have an influence on when queens have their first season, if there is any siamese blood around they can be very precocious (and vocal!), whereas breeds like ragdolls can be over a year. When you don't know their ancestry, better safe than sorry, although even if you didn't have a tom next door, any around would sense lovely young females and come courting! The girls would also go searching for a mate if none came to them.
A word with your vet might be wise, putting them on the pill until they are old enough to be done sounds a good idea if he agrees.

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
