  • What did you do this weekend?

    We burnt stuff (yay!!)

I finally got rid of the tomato plants (trying to ripen the rest with bananas in boxes!) in the greenhouse and tidied it all

We also began chopping some trees between the orchard and paddock down, ready for the "tree people" to come and grind the stumps down and prune some monster trees we've got.
We plant to "open up" the back of our garden, so have about 14 conifers to get rid of and a disease-ridden apple tree. Did the apple tree and half the conifers yesterday.

We're going to have a *huge* bonfire on Nov 5th...

What did you all do this weekend?

I pondered over the organic gardening catalogue and dt brown's! Also went shopping - son needed new shoes and I'm after a pay-as-you-go mobile phone - what a minefield that is! I don't phone many people - my mother is the main one. We had a mobile phone - had one in 1999 but gave it up 5 years ago. OH got rid of his earlier this year - we never used them apart from the occasional text and call to say missed the bus!
Had a peek at the plot. Had some peas to eat - yum, never enough for a meal because I eat them there and then. Got a green cauli/romanesco thing ready for harvesting - was going to pick yesterday but was raining.

Put straw under my only remaining pumpkin - all the little ones seem to get eaten; I'm left with one, which is about bowling ball size and a dinky one which hasn't yet been munched - I've put straw under this too, in the hope that it may survive. In fairness, I only have one plant, but had hoped for 4 or 5 reasonable pumpkins.

I went to Bridgemere Garden World hoping to pick up some vine weevil nematodes as they usually have them in stock but the fridge was bare so I came away with a willow wigwam thingy for only £2.50, some tulip bulbs, Radar onion sets, a bird feeder for peanuts & 4 coconut fat bird feeders (full of fat not for fat birds!). Expensive day out really!
Into every life a little rain must fall.

Hi multiveg - I've had a Virgin pay as you go phone for the last......mmmmm crikey! 10 years! I wouldn't swop it for any other, as my best mate who lives in Dorset and I have had free texts to each other all summer! Just watch out for the cost per minute for texts and talk and the like - you could get a good deal I'm sure. DDL

Spent the weekend on the plot again, dodging rain on Sunday, but working hard, now have the final paths cleared, last rotten edging boards replaced and all paths barked up! Also managed to double dig one bed and finally planted our onion sets!

Not a lot really due to other commitments like work and Mr E's case studies for his year 2 Crystal Therapy course and of course the rain. Helped put Varroa strips in the hives I have been helping with and am now looking forward to getting my own beezzzzz.

I'm with Virgin too DDL and love the pay by Direct Debit option. I've found it is great if you only want to make quick calls or send a few texts. Mr E is also on Virgin so the free texts and now v. low cost calls for oct and nov are/will be a boon as virgin mobile to virgin mobile works out cheaper than to/from a landline.

Sounds like you are going great guns Mrs D. Especially considering the double digging. Must get cracking next week as the next two weekends are taken up with either Mr E or myself being on a course.
                Bright Blessings

Crickey DDl, you're a true Branson devotee! Must admit, I used to work for one of his companies and people who work there are soooooooo loyal. I still have as much respect for him now as I did back then

Let me think now...what did I do?...oh I remember now!!! Saturday I dug up my Pink Fir Apple tatties. Stored them in a cardboard box as I have no paper sacks left and I'm ti tight to buy them. After digging over to make sure I hadn't missed any I raked the four foot by fifteen foot bed over and planted strawberry plants I had thinned out from my other garden. I cut the majority of the leaves off these as I thought they would just drop them anyway as they were bare rooted plants. Hope they make a tiny bit of leaf growth before the onset of winter. I might even fleece half of them for an early crop, not sure yet.

I left the plot with the veg for the Sunday dinner, carrots, cauliflower, french beans and tatties

After dinner on Sunday (very nice!) I went over and picked about a dozen outdoor cucumbers!! I have no idea what I am going to do with these....I suppose I'll have to check the vine for recipes!

                      Must get myself a blog!!!!!

I was along way from the allotment running my 4th Great North Run.

I have took today off to recover! And tomorrow to spend sometime in the allotment. Unfortunately I have a foot injury as a result of GNR and I will probably have to rest it on Tuesday.

What a shame! It looks like rain anyway. Will have to do all those jobs next weekend, foot permitting.

Well on Saturday the weather was awful with really heavy rain and wind. I did'nt mind as my grandson was being christened so did'nt need the rain to keep off as we had a big party afterwards and so was indoors all day. Sunday, spent the day recovering.

What a day it has been. Went shopping to Tescos, then stopped at plot for green cauli. On the walk home, had to pick son up from school. We stopped just after crossing the main road to eat some blackberries growing along the wall. I put my shopping & plottie harvest down. Lovely blackberries. Pick me bags up, get home and discover one bag is missing - I knew I had it when I put it down at the blackberry hedge. It wasn't windy enough for it to blow away. I think it might have gone walkies with someone. - at least it wasn't my plottie harvest.

Still not decided on phone - looking at t-mobile with flat rate (not mates rate) - argos have a phone for this going cheap. Not impressed with mobile phone & shop websites - virgin says with free doodah but under terms and conditions, is already out of date (31st August!), and the supermarket beginning with A is also not up to date. Grrrrrrr
