  • some people just don't get it

I was recently talking to a friend of mine who has unfortunatly lost his very well paid job, he was complaining that although his partners wages cover the bills and morgage etc that his bills were higher because he was eating more and using more heat and electricity due to being at home all day and just watching tv etc.

so i suggested why not use his very big garden and start to grow his own, i even offered to 'donate' my seeds and spare tools and very little knowledge that i have.

he screwed his face up at me like i was from another planet and said 'i'm not 50 yet you know' - i'm only 26 so i don't understand that one but he just doesn't seem to get it, he could save tons of money and keep himself busy all at the same time. i know that losing a job can crush your self-esteem etc but some people just don't get it

On reaching 60 I'm sure some of the younger generation are from a different planet but I expect my mother(80) thinks the same!

people took the mick out of me so much last year for gardening but i had a bbq and if anyone wanted salad they were handed some sissors and told to cut it, they loved and yet they still take the mick!!

i reckon if the credit crunch carries on like this then more people will have no choice but to grow their own and i think that's a good thing

My OH hates gardening but he loves me growing my own and as I took on my plot as my project he only gets involved if I ask for help. Maybe this person doesnt like gardening its nor everyones thing. Its no good growing if your just not interested. I agrre it would give him something to do.

Well, more fool him, he's obviously too wrapped up in himself and how other people see him. I don't give a toss what people think about me, I enjoy my gardening and lottie etc, let him pay over the odds for veg etc. Think it was very rude how he responded to your suggestion!

Losing your job/redundancy is a kick in the teeth, it does seriously knock your self-esteem, and I can confirm this. BUT, you have to drag your own @r*e up and get on with it - no one's going to do it for you. Perhaps he just hasn't got past the self-pitying stage yet. After all, if he got off his backside, turned the telly off and went and did something constructive he wouldn't need the heating on, and the bills would lessen. He's a muppet .

I'm with Mrs C on this one, I actually wish I was in Rainbowbrite's friends shoes...

I have to work to pay the bills and still find time to grow my own, look after chicks etc. Oh to have the time to spend all day.

Some people just don;t like gardening, it just is'nt for them.
I have 2 sisters who could'nt bear the thought of planting or digging.
That being said, theres no need for him to be rude to you.

I agree... a few people have tried to rib me about my lottie only being 34 etc... and all that... but one person had the cheek to rib me and then talk about joining the WI !!!! and she is 38.

Some people want to take 5 and look at them self! .

What can be bad about growing your own combined with the fresh air. I am hooked already.
