did anyone see that study in the paper about 18 months ago about city kids not knowing what a carrot looked like?
what is the world coming too?

I agree with your sentiments but it's a sad fact that if you said to a lot of these families we are not going to give you benfits but we will give you an allotment then a lot of them would be up in arms the rest would probaly grow drugs

It's regrettable that the poorest often spend more on expensive, nutritionally poor, convenience food. I believe this is a fault of education, bring back home economics, well named imho.

Well you just have to look at these mums passing fish and chips and burgers through the school fences, what on earth do they think they are doing for their kids! Before we started the move towards growing our own I am ashamed to say my daughter (3) at the time though all food came from the supermarket. The allotment put a stop to that fortunately.

Be rather cheaper if the parents could do a lunchbox - sandwich with cheese or salad or meaty filling, fruit juice, and a piece of fruit.

People do need to be educated not only on the benefits of home grown food, but also on HOW to do it - perhaps colleges could provide courses in veg and fruit growing [free of charge to those on benefits]. There are probably many people who would love to grow their own but have no idea where to begin. In fact, it wouldn't be a bad idea to teach secondary school kids the basics of gardening and growing veg instead of some of the useless subjects they seem to study. If people are told in an informative and interesting way what is good for them, they'll listen but unfortunately there are too many 'know alls' out there who do it in a condescending manner. Also, councils which do not have sufficient allotments could lease land from farmers. Things have changed a lot - when I was a child, people who grew their own veg on allotments were thought to be too poor to buy it!!!]

What ever happened to proper cookery lessons in schools? you wouldnt catch me eating something "ready made" or "frozen"!
Unless children can learn the basics, they wont have the knowledge in later life!
Heard the other day that the government, following Jamie Oliver, was going to reintroduce lessons - but that they were optional! not good enough!
