  • Bring and Barter

I would like to bring back some kind of community feeling at my allotments so was thinking of having some kind of stall once a month where plot holders can come and bring excess seeds , plants , veg and fruit
what ever they have spare and they don't want even something like old bits of wood .. Does anyone know how a bring and barter stall works or have you any ideas how we could run this kind of stall

    cheers roadkill

I suppose you'd have to have someone neutral there to ascertain the worth of whatever people were bringing? How would you determine whether a plank of wood was worth one tomato plant or 2? Or would you assign a value to things as they were brought? ie a plank of wood in good nick is worth 2 credits, but a slightly manky one is worth one credit, and a seedling tomato is worth one credit, but a bigger one worth 2 credits?

It's a fabulous idea though, I'm sure you can work it out

If I were to organise this, I would do a couple of things. I would talk to other plot holders first, to gauge interest and also to get them thinking about things to trade and look for. Then go around and get some ideas of what people have in mind and tell them some of the goodies others are thinking about to get them excited about a possible trade. Then choose a day, probably a weekend afternoon or morning and suggest that everyone comes with their things to trade and barter away between time A and B. An hour or two would be enough. If you have the facilities, offer to make tea for everyone.

If everyone comes at the same time, you don't have to judge what anything is worth, people can come to their own arrangements. Having everyone together will improve community relations better than a drop-off service too.

i agree with growem let them decied themselves what its worth as it will stop anyone moaning to you about "you let them have a peice of string for a sack of spuds but you only gave a seed for a plank" but all in all sounds a very good idea would love to go to a barter as i have more junk ooops items to give than cash...lol
