  • Eden Project

Thought you might like to see some pics I took at the Eden Project in Cornwall the other week. They have a vegetable section outdoors & grow various fruit & veg. indoors in the Mediterranean dome. They had some trial sections where they were growing toms in various different mediums & hydroponically etc. to test ideas for growing in harsh climates in countries with drought etc. & everything was still growing very well even though it was nearly the end of September.

It looks, and sounds a fabulous place to visit! Not sure OH would approve though! It's a bit of a long way (as you know!) from here, but hopefully one day......................... DDL PS did they sell seeds?

It looks great. OH is taking me there next year for my birthday. Am really looking forward to it.

Lovely pics Sue. Wish I could grow in straight lines like that.

That sounds like a lovely birthday present Bramble.

Having been to the Eden Project when it first opened I thought it was great then. We are planning a trip to see Mr E's mum sometime next year so hopefully will go again.

Re the seeds - I think I saw something in the mag about a seed selection. Not to hand at the mo so will check and post again later.

They do sell seeds & plants there DDL. They have some normal seeds, wildflowers & lots of exotic ones. I bought a baby Aeonium 'Black Cap' which had been propagated there & a 'Solanum' plant & was tempted to buy a tree fern but decided to buy a handmade terracotta pot with Eden Projecton it, chocolates, drink etc. & ran out of money! It's expensive to get in but you can get a membership that lasts a year by doing various things, last year I got one free by potting some bulbs so I didn't have to pay this time & I got a free ticket for O.H. by doing a survey for someone online & choosing a free day out reward. You can also get a membership at the moment by signing a form so they can claim the tax back or sometimes you just have to pay about £3 more to get the pass.

We enjoyed the Eden Project a couple of years ago, even though it poured with rain! (get there as it opens & you have the place to yourself for an hour or so, Bramble). We also loved The Lost Gardens of Heligan-probably even more than Eden-such a great story & fantastic walled gardens, including the kitchen gardens, and it wasn't too far from Eden. As for those cornish pasties....delish!

Just remembered the free day out pass was for the seal sanctuary, I got the Eden ticket free from Sainsbury Nectar points - supermarkets come in handy sometimes, I also get Gardeners' World magazine subs free from Tesco clubcard points! Here's a few more pics I took at Eden. We didn't get to Heligan Winnie, but I would like to go there next time as it sounds lovely.

You can buy Eden Project seeds from Suttons Seeds as well now & I've just noticed that a selection of seeds from them is one of the prizes in this month's GYO Giveaways.

Was down there this summer - is expensive to get in but dead good. We got a discount (£4?) for cycling there and then because we offered to gift aid our entrance fee we got a free year's membership for free. Unfortunatly it's too far to go again soon so can't see we'll get to use it!

Don't think it matters much for seeing what's in the domes as their temperature seems to be kept pretty constant - note it's VERY hot in the larger dome so make sure you can take off layers! Outside varies, we went in spring when it first opened and then again this summer and it was totally different but good both times. I particularly liked the veg garden round the cafe patio area this summer, edible plants as far as you could see! Never been in winter so don't know what they manage outdoors then but am sure somebody will have been.

Will try to get there first thing as we will be staying in the area for a few days. Glad to hear good things about the Helligan Gardens as we are planning to visit them as well while we are in the vacinity. Am really looking forward to it but it won't be until next May.
