free swimming for under 16's & over 60's

As part of the change 4 life inititative lots of sports centres (I really don't know if it all?) are offering free swimming for under 16's and over 60's from April 1st.
You can register now at your local sports centre, fill out a short form and then you get a card and membership info.
I registered my children at our local pool yesterday, they will now (from 1st April) be able to swim for free at a good many swimming pools in wiltshire, good eh?

It is good, but do they provide swimming lessons? Learning how to swim properly is a potential lifesaver.

My kids belong to a swimming club (costs me £60/month!), heating water to 28C 24/7 is expensive.

The swimming pool in St Annes I used closed last year, not long after the council spent lots of money repairing the roof - go figure!

No we still have to pay for lessons £18 a month per child. I agree, all children should learn to swim, it's a life skill.

Our Council's been neglecting the town pool for decades - "they" are trying to knock it down and build a super-Casino. As if we need one

My daughter has done her lessons from age 5/6 to age 11 she got to level 10 when they stop, cost me a fortune she then did life saving for a few weeks and passed. As we live near the sea I think all kids should be taught to swim, when my boys were small the schools got free lessons in the local pool then they started to charge. It should be part of the school curriculum. Now she is at senior school only the ones that cant swim are given lessons in the school pool ( outdoor ) in the summer.

I don't know whether she pays or not but my Mother in Law (80) goes swimming twice a week at 8AM and once a week to the Gym .

It will be free in Leeds.

They are closing sports centres here too, they seem to get to almost 40 years old, and then they get a government grant (PFI) to knock it down, even tho it would be better to refurbish the centre.
Its your tax, but if you dont care!

Even though I think this is a great idea, in our area Disabled miss out once again. Our council originally had something called Exercise on prescription which helped in the cost of providing not just swimming but all sports. As part of the deal to do Change for Life they had to stop that initiative.
