TV Volume!

Definately not gardening related this one. But last night, as usual, when the film we were watching stopped for the adverts on the television, the volume gets louder. One of us has to make a grab for the remote, although we don't have to bother about neighbours! But its just so LOUD

Half way through the film my OH suggested I put this question to you all in case anyone knows why this happens, or if indeed it happens on anyone else's TV. (He said you seem to be quite a clever lot really )

This also enrages us! It is the tv channels themselves who do this, even though they are not supposed to increase the volume over a certain level. I believe channel 4 were fined recently for exactly this. Has not stopped them though has it!

I was told years ago that the Ads are louder because the TV companies are trying to make themselves heard to all the people who automatically get up at the Ads to make cups of tea or put the washing on etc...

Not sure if it's true, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense..

You can get those tellies that quiten donw at the ads can't you (or did I make that up )

I wonder if it is the same with commercial radio, though I don't know - radio is rarely tuned away from Radio 4. GQT on today!

The ads are louder so that you take notice and buy whatever they are selling. It is annoying though, just like those films where you can't hear the dialogue and then the music starts up and deafens you. All I seem to do on here is rant!

Advertisers need to find a method to force potential buyers to pay attention to their products whereas we are usually busy filtering out much of the external stimuli bombarding our senses. So they use techniques that cause sudden changes - like loud noises - to force their way into our attention again. If only they realised suddenly going quiet would work just as well!

Repetition is another one (I noticed someone mentioning those awful double glazing ads!) Although less effective (and really annoying), they still manage to draw attention!

I was told that they (TV Compays) are not allowed to turn up the volume when the Ads come on so thay say they turn down the volume when they put the film on!

Nog,where did you get your pic from(is it called aviator or something-cant remember) My son needs pics like this for a level art research.I think its from a record cover but cant remember which one!.Sorry will let everyone get back to original descusion now!!!!!

Cor in my day you had to do you own pictures for A leve not nich them off the internet.

I spent hours grinding my pigments in to a fine paste you should have heard the oinking.

Then thought sod it I will just down load it off some site.

do what we do, throw out your telly, download anything you want to watch from free internet site, minus ads, and you can watch it when you want, you will find you dont watch half as much c**p

Glad its not just our TV. OH will be pleased. He was sure I had pressed the wrong buttons when setting it up. (I am just slightly more technologically minded that he is!)
