Using Log-roll ?

Hi,
being a bit of a DIY anorak, I'd like to know the best way to fix 22cm
log-roll, to stakes, so it is more secure. I plan to use it to surround a pear treewithin a gravel bed.

I was told I should not 'Blunt' the nail, ie. to stop them splitting the wood.
Any thoughts ?

And how many stakes per 180cm length ?

I made a border with this around the front of my plot I havent fixed mine and so far its stayed put. One piece along the front and one piece cut in half down each side.

I know the theory wrt blunting nails, but I don't find it convincing; if it is going to split, it will probably split whether you do or you don't. Why not tie/nail the connecting stuff rather than the 'logs'?

If you are nailing one piece of wood to aother first drill the wood with a drill that the nail will pass through and drill the post with a smaller drill and the wood will not split....jacob
