Sneezing Cat

My cat has started sneezing a lot and not just one or two,its sneezing fits. Its funny to watch but she has never done this before, she is about 8/9. Our cat that went missing before christmas used to do this as well. We dont smoke and no new smells to irritate her, could it be hayfever of some sort ???

Has she been injected against Feline flu? If yes, I guess it could be hayfever - but I'd ask the vet PDQ in case of Feline flu

Our cat started sneezing once, when he was about 5 years old. Checked with the vet and he had just caught the feline version of a cold. Nothing to worry about in the end but gosh did he look funny (and very indignant when we laughed at him!). I doubt it would be hayfever at his age, unless you've suddenly moved to a different area.

I'd expect a temperature, runny eyes and possibly third eyelid appearing, plus a snotty nose. Sneezes from colds tend to be one/two at a time, whereas allergy ones are one after the other. I know Piriton is available for horses and dogs, maybe see if there's a feline equivalent?

1 of mine sneezes on an almost daily basis, but that's because she is nearest the floor where all the dust is!!

Nope not moved and we have had her since she was five, no fields nearby that contain anything except grass as we live in the town. No other symptons at all will keep an eye on her though.

My 7 year old boy has got asthma or so the vet says. Started out with sneezing last summer and thought it was cat version of hay fever from pollen but developed into a wheezy cough. Got treated with injection and tablets which lasted a few weeks but then came back. Vet said he would have it for life.

Well got worse over the last few weeks and sneezed so hard the other day there was blood in the mucus he sneezed up. So vet yesterday again. Tablets again for 3 weeks this time though antibiotics even though she admitted it might be viral. Says Amox on bottle so I guess a milder version of the human antibiotic amoxycillin.

When I asked what it was she was very vague...asthma, flu, hay fever or a viral infection even herpes! So could be anything really. He does seem a bit better today but hates the tablets. even with 2 of us somehow manages to spit it out...poor old boy.

I would only get more concerned if develops more. My boy got flu 2 years ago which was much worse than this. He couldn't breathe through his nose at all and wasn't comfortable with mouth breathing. Took 3-4 weeks to recover. At that time the vet said that even if you vaccinate them, they can still get the flu, just like we can get a cold or flu repeatedly.

Hope she gets better soon. It is funny sometimes but worrying all the same when you don't know what's causing it.

Wouldn't be something like a grass-seed stuck up the cat's nose? Just a thought.
Also last time I had this problem it was because the little begger had got at my home made mayonnaise very liberally dosed with freshly ground black pepper. Very worrying until we'd done the Sherlock Holmes bit and tracked back to see what he'd been up to. Footprints on kitchen counter, cover askew on mayonnaise - I rest my case!

My lovely old 'Sebbie' started sneezing and sort of coughing, off to V E T S (HF spells this out- force of habit) the vets found a 3" piece of grass stuff in nose and throat!
My poor old boy.

Hi Jackie. My cat is almost 17 now and she started sneezing last week, which I found comical to begin with. Then her eye started watering alot. By Monday she hadn't eaten for 2 days and I took her to the vet. My poor little cat has an abscess in her sinus, which is pressing on her tear duct and her teeth. The vet says she should have the top teeth out but he won't risk it .(due to her age and condition, she wouldn't survive the anaesthetic) He has given her antibiotics (by injection thank gawd) and something to reduce the swelling. I have to take her back if she doesn't start to eat but I'm relieved to say, she is eating her head off and is more like her normal self today! Phew!! She already has health problems - a tumour on her thyroid, which makes it over active and high blood pressure, linked to the same condition. She has 2 tablets daily and I have resorted to crushing them up in her food as she got wise to everything else and had a sixth sense about it. Please keep an eye on your cat's sneezing!!! Keep us posted ?

She snezzes on and off during the day and night, she was fine for ages untill OH came home late from work last night so now I blame him lol
