So what! At least they're getting back to basics and creating a garden. I too was sick of Berryfields and get a distinct impression they were kicked out (I did remember that Monty said they'd moved there for the long term and it wasn't linked to the lead presenter but it wasn't great, they spent most of the season in the long borders - it sounded like they were on covert ops). Happy that they have returned to the ethos of Clegg Farm and of Geoff Hamilton. For the first time last night, I learnt something new from GW. That's got to be good....infact it's great.

A couple of years ago I bought the Geoff Hamilton DVD set and have been watching the 3 disks through twice this spring. It's strange, they're a bit repetative and look a bit dated and as for the commentary, it's like Grease or the Sound of Music, getting to know the words off by heart now.

But it's still so inspirational, can still find tips and ideas - like using the fruit trees in a tunnel and the best way to prune them, rose arches and pruning etc - so even for some of us older hands, there's still learning to be done.

As for Toby's new garden, I just wonder how much all that infrastructure cost, doesn't seem to have been too much recycling done there, it all looks very pristine. Most of my gardening is done using minimal purchasing and maximum recycling of what I've already got. One fruit tunnel is recycled fencing, sort of the style of Jamie Oliver's fruit tunnels but as I'm replacing all the fencing on the boundaries at the front of the house with hedges, it's all 'free'.

        I hate it

OMG I am fashionable....I cant stand it.
I used to like being the odd bloke in muddy boots and tramps jacket. Girls wouldn't look at me.

Now growing veg is fashionable I am getting too much "girl" attention.

I Wyvale yesterday some young chick...well she was about 50....came and chatted me up.

Ok she was asking me about tomato plants but I know that was just a ploy for her to get my address.

        Anyone else notice this.

Just got round to watching the programme this morning and so far I thought it looks promising. I enjoyed it and loved the bit with the "posh ginger bird" trying to hammer the nail in, made my ham fisted OH feel really smug.

Yes i thought it was very refreshing and might entice more people into gardening, which has to be a good thing. I was so relieved to know that i am not the only person who can't hammer a nail in. (and I teach DT too!)

I loved their shed, thought it was ace they got the windows from a salvage yard, though if they had gone down the tip they could have saved alot of money! I am going to do my shed up now as it is looking mighty sad a nice place to escape to though it is about a 6th of the size of theirs.

I was quite excited at the start when they showed a bit unkept field but was disappointed that they then glossed over the preparation and suddenly it was all cleared. It's not that easy for most of us and I think it's important to talk about ways of doing things from scratch, almost certainly without the budget to build a bespoke greenhouse / conservatory. Agree that it's much better than Berryfields but I still think they've missed a trick or two. Am looking forward to next week as I understand it's veg based.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Ah, just found this thread after posting on another - doh

Found it much better than anything at Berryfields but like some others was disappointed by the massive expenditure which would be out of the realms of most people. For a normal person to take on a garden and have it cleared for them like that is probably unrealistic. I would have welcomed a discussion about how to clear plots (unless this was when I nipped to the loo) rather than gloss over it in 5 mins at the start. No problems with Toby as host (much better than Monty but not as good as Geoff / Alan) but can they get shot of Toby, he knows practically nothing about gardening, and always looks like a fool when asked to do anything. Suppose some people like the design aspect but it's not my thing.

Thought that the "your best tools" bit could have been much better but it felt like a token gesture and even OH who wasn't really watching mentioned that they were trying to go Top Gear. Will carry on watching but will reserve full judgement until at least half way through the series.

I can tell you one thing - I wouldn't want to be a producer for GW.

I find it hard enough pleasing just one person.

We only caught a bit of it, but it was when they were building the compost boxes...

My OH (garden carpenter, overall bodger, handyman) wasn't impressed that they seemed to be using brand new pallets for compost boxes! He said that they should have used old/recycled ones, seeing as that's what most people would use.

He also thought that Alys was rubbish with the hammer etc, and said that if he had been there, he would have taken the hammer off her and done it himself. That's why I let him make everything for the garden/chickens, as I'll never do it right!

Have now bookmarked it on the TV Box, so I can make a proper informed view of it!!
