I thought the bit with the child a bit pointless really, especially as they already have something like that on the children's channels. Also propagators are expensive, but then I try to do everything as cheaply as possible (I did have my children outside yesterday sowing seeds).

Sounds like they could do with two programs, one for the beginners who need advice where to start...and one for people who have been gardening for years but want to do more things.

They also need a completely overgrown patch with brambles, bind weed, couch grass and other really annoying weeds and show how to change it into a thriving vegetable patch!
I have a cheap heated propagator (£9.99 on special offer 2 years ago), and you can buy unheated ones in ASDA for £2, including a divider thing with 40 sections (modules?). I have 2 of those on the windowsill with peas and beans in ready for when 'danger of frost' is over and they can be planted out.
Using a poly-bag as a one-pot-size propagator does work quite well.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

    • Ah, maybe it's because I can never find any cheap ones It looked expensive!

      • As for choosing 3 from 6 on CK's section. We, the 6 candidates did all agree this was a bit daft and why not have all 6?
It was bad enough going for the interviews in the first place, then 3 people being kicked off on TV!

        • The teabag thing was to stop compost falling through the hole in the bottom of the pot - makes excellent sense, but I had never have thought to do that before the programme.

            • I couldn't believe that Alyss (sp?) spent ages trying to pick off a biodegradable pot from a plant in tiny pieces before she planted it!!
              Do it! Life's too short

              • Could not believe the scatty nature of the programme last night, got bored, fell asleep, woke up to some bloke getting all gooey about Gnomes, and asking us to send him some more.

I did record the prog as well, but wondering if I should bother playing it back to see what I missed, or shampoo the cat instead..!?!?

                • I was disappointed in last nights show.
Some good bits and some terrible bits.
I think the camera angles are to blame for most of the problems as they zoom in on the presenter as he is telling you what to do with the plants, then the next thing you see is them planted or not at all. I watched the bit about the climbers and at the end when it was getting to the important part about planting and the angle to face it at towards the wall the camera moved away and looked through a bush at Toby and I saw nothing.
                  Gnomes were on too long.
Get the Beechgrove garden on and see the difference.
I was also a bit worried when they didn't know what foxgloves they were planting.

                  • That biodegradable pot thing - I think I've seen those in my local gc. They are nothing like peat pots, which you would expect to put in the ground. They are the same sizes and shape as classic plant pots, but much heavier. At the price charged, and bearing in mind the sizes that they come in, I am sure you are supposed to re-use them again and again, like you do with a plastic or clay one, not just for one seedling and then put them in the ground.

Anyway it looked like Alyss was trying to get the plant out of the pot, but the pot kept breaking. Not a great advert!

TBH I can't quite see the point of them. I know the theory of biodegradable is good, but I just keeping re-using plastic ones so they won't be going into landfill any time soon in any case. The new biodegradable ones are way too expensive to use just once - paper pots do that much cheaper and greener.

                      • It was very 'Blue Peter'. However, as more youngsters become interested in gardening, perhaps that style is appropriate. However, my 13 year old refused to watch it, he felt an affinity with Monty Don and a more grown up approach.

                        • I recordered it which was good as it meant that I could watch the whole show in about 20 minutes and could quite happily avoid the gnome bit. Like a few others I feel that the amount of money which they have spent on the raised beds etc is ridiculous and think it's a real shame that they haven't built the garden up more as somebody would in their own home but that's just me. Am not convinced that the thrify tips are particularly good and I find Joe Swift to be a bit of a bumbling fool (he's probably a nice bloke but he come over as not knowing left from right in the garden). However the bit I'm most concerned about is how they skip lots of the details and gloss over the need to remove weeds or stop the soil becoming compacted. A bit all too superficial for me and I still hate the Top Gear Cool Wall section. Makes me cringe.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
