  • I presume Devon surfer is the Mike with Carol tonight on GW?(unless there were 2 mikes to start with an I've put my foot in it.)

    • Was he the one with the light weight fork, if so then he needs to get a heavy duty one if he's going to be working with Carol!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

      • Yes its me (Mike) and I understand about the fork. It was inherited, was a comical moment when it snapped, we did laugh quite a lot off camera. Did'nt think it would be shown!

        • Gardeners World

Well, after watching this weeks gardeners world, i thought i would check out the BBC blog. I was shocked when i got there to find a load of people slating the show. Calling the new presenters and saying that the show had been dumbed down and worst of all demanding to see more of Carol Klein!! I think the show is fab! i love it ive never watched any of the other series, it all seemed aimed at OAPs and for the knowledgeable gardener. But now it is new exciting and lighthearted.
Everyone on the beeb blog wants Carol to present it and basically just wants a carol show. Honestly if she gets anymore time on the show i will cry. She is the only one i dont get for some reason (i fast forward her - the joys of sky plus and iplayer )
Am i the only one who enjoys watching the show anymore?

              • I think the message here is that it is no longer a programme for seasoned gardeners!

                • I dont think it ever was for seasoned garderners, i think it has always had a learning element. Maybe it has just started back at the beginning to catch all the new enthusiasts and GYO converts - I am sure it will catch back up as the season progresses.

                  • I don't know - I always watched it and I never felt talked down to as I have recently. You are never TOO seasoned to learn - or be reminded.

If it catches up as the season progresses there will be a lot of us who won't know about it. Many former viewers seem to have lost the will to live with the new season.

                    • Personally I don't like being talked down to no matter what level of knowledge I have.

There have always been segments on GW that I have been interested in, and others not so. I have no objection to it being biased towards those starting out, but I don't like the new presentation, set up jokes, and Blue Peter-ish feel. Why not go the whole hog and get Ant and Dec to present it?

The question is......are they better pandering to the needs of boring old farts like myself or pandering to a new generation of gardener wannabe's?

They will have no doubt done there research on viewing audiences and target certain groups.

I watched it for the first time in about five years the other evening and thought the format was quite good. You can't please all of the people all of the time and I must confess to not learning much, but it was presented well enough.
They never mentioned how much that big fern he put in at the beginning of the programme cost but I dare hazzard a guess it was a weeks wages for poor mortals like I!

I did think that the whole programme was very middle class though!

but I am curious as to what sort of info/format would the 'seasoned' gardeners be looking for?

And being talked to like we were over 12.

                              • I have only watched GW for the past 5 years so although things have changed with different presenters I still find it a pleasure to watch. i just like watching something about what I like doing. However, as I have got more experienced and more enthusiastic about gardening I would like another show which was more in depth. Sunday evening would be a good time, a good couple of hours of horticulture, maybe an extended visual and practical version of Gardener's Question Time on Radio 4. But then I would probably watch anything to do with gardening
