Wood chippings

I've often wondered what the council do with all the wood cuttings after felling trees. I needed some to put round my beds so I dropped them an email. Just had a reply this morning saying they where working locally and would drop off some next week - RESULT!

We have a tip nearby where you take your bags and a shovel and help yourself. Its called Ruby tip near Ippelpen for any locals round here.

Yup, large brick-like chunks that'll break your arm if you land on it! Commercially it is known as 'Play Grade' so they can charge really inflated prices for it!

Can't get anything off our council - all green waste of any description goes to prettify the mess left by Tarmac and the council... Tarmac quarried, and then the council used the quarry for land-fill, also selling 'waste space' to neighbouring councils. So they compost everything and use it to cover the hideous mess up... It'll be years before they've got enough, and by then I expect Tarmac will have abandoned another quarry...

Nilling- you also want to contact tree surgeons aswell they need to get rid of their chippings and usually will deliver to your site! It costs them to tip it, so it saves them money. I get regular deliveries for our site as its always used!

I also set up a regular supply when I was Sec but there aint been any since I chucked it!
One good idea I did see was that as each tree was felled or pruned the tree's own chippings were used as a mulch saving the council from transporting and storing chippings.

The supply I set up was from local tree surgeons who were more than happy to tip it at the allotments as it cost THEM to tip it at the dump!

If you can't get chippings from the council ask a tree surgeon, they have to pay if the tip on a landfill site and all the ones I've spoken to in the past will drop as much as they can if they are working in the area.

Well the man from the council was a man of his word. Arrived home from work last night to see a large and steaming pile of wood chips on my drive, very pleased. Going to have to move it quickly as they have forecast gales tonight.
