    [rant]
Don't you just hate it when you hear a parent telling a small child that blackberries are horrible, especially when this parent is giving her child sweets full of E-numbers, crisps, junk food.
There are others that cite car fumes for "making the blackberries dirty", but they are quite happy to puff away in front of their children or in the car while taking them to school.

    speechless

Can't believe some people. I worked at a countryside fayre one summer and kids were fascinated by the snakes - we had grass snakes, smooth snakes etc and we showed them how to handle the snakes, putting the welfare of the reptiles first of course. It was a great way of getting kids interested in nature and teaching them how to respect wild animals. I know snakes aren't everyone's cuppa, but unfortunately some parents stopped their kids going near the snakes, telling them they were dirty and slimy.

Clueless. What a huge shame. The snakes were more likely to catch something off the kids, rather than the other way round.

The next time I see the one I saw today and with a packet of choccie (the CSI crime/forensics series had a case with someone dying from lead poisoning after eating lots and lots of choccie day in and day out for 20 plus years - is Africa still on leaded petrol?) or sweets - can say - car fumes are in the air, E-numbers are not.

It amount of Lead in the petrol was miniscule......don't you find it odd that the octaine of petrol is reduced with the elimation of the lead (Yep I know that the Lead increases the Octine but it was added as a lubicant).

It all to do with marketing.

I've just had to re read your post NOG, could have sworn it said octarine. Too much Terry Pratchett again.

I despair with some of the things I see/hear. Miss E has eczema which is flared up by Sodium Benzoate (a commonly used preservative in liquids) and to a certain extent artificial colours. This means that we regularly get told when in a supermarket that something hurts her skin. She is very happy with water or watered down juice and thoroughly enjoyed picking and eating blackberries off the "bush". She is gradually learning which berries she can and can't eat because she understands that some will make her tummy poorly but some are ok.

I know for a city mum I am probably unusual. Miss E comes to the "vegetables" with us and is looking forward to having her own ribena berry bushes. As I've said before on a different thread she has no qualms (ooh like that word) about handling worms, beetles, slugs, snails etc. It's a shame really the ignorance and prejudice out there and the damage it is doing to children.

Miss E's school recently held a parent workshop called "Toxic Childhood" led by Sue Palmer which was great and really confirmed to us that the way we are going is good. Will have to read the book in its entirety now.

Oh well that's that off my chest.

I have to smile when if you want to adopt or foster kids you have to be vetted to see if you are suitable, where as the wayne & waynetta slobs of this world ar allowed to breed willy nilly ( although if you willy is nilly it can be difficult )
