where do the slugs go to during the day?

along the top of the soil of my hanging baskets in the greenhouse there is slug trails, they havint touched the plants, yet, and i have searched everywhere for them, or it, and i cant find them!
where do they go?
i have put beer traps down so hopefully i will get them tonight!
but where do they go during the day??????

I found all your slugs in my log store this afternoon. Would you like them back?

I get trails ini my house, too! They come for a little pool party in the cats' water bowls, then sleep it off under a cupboard, I reckon. I sometimes find the odd dessicated one (but fight the urge to do a Baldrick and his performing slug act).

I imagine them all in a 'Slug Only Gentlemen's Club', smoking cigars, playing pool, smacking the girlie slugs on their bottoms as they wait the tables...

Search carefully around the base of target plant, but generally they crawl out from somewhere cool and moist, like the base of old wall. Also fond of plastic; clearing out greenhouse and unfolded old bag (not wife) to find lots of em. when I picked up bucket there was big bad boy underneath. You may also find them (snails) huddled together behind cotoneaster or Euonymus (shiney tough leaf) and in cracks and angles of walls, etc. Think damp and moist, think snail! and go gettum!

I have a couple of raised beds in the garden. They're not raised very far (2-3 inches), and been there for a few years, but recently i decided to redo one of them, the first bed i did, as it a) wasn't very good and b) the wooden sides were slowly falling over, outwards. This is because when i created the bed, the sides weren't quite straight down, and i didn't fill in the gap on the side where the grass is, so over time, the wooden sides slid outwards.

Anyway. (there is a relevant point to the thread, i promise!) I dug the soil out from the bed, and pulled out the wooden sides, and to my astonishment, there were a few colonies of slugs, sort of hibernating on the wood. They'd obviously been there all winter. I promptly got my ammonia/water spray and sprayed the lot, and they curled up and died. So to answer your question - anywhere that's dark, out of the way of of inclement weather, and out of the way of predators like birds! Turn over stepping stones, bits of wood, anything like that..

I'll be getting some organic slug pellets tomorrow, and i reckon that, combined with slug traps and my trusty ammonia/water spray on an evening hunt with the torch should see off the worst of them this year.. i hope!

[ammonia/water spray: combine 1 part ammonia to 1 part water - but don't spray too intensively on one plant, you don't need it anyway. One squirt and the slug starts to writhe, it'll fall off whatever its on, and eventually die, bit like when salt is applied. However, unlike salt, the ammonia simply converts to nitrogen in the soil, so does a little good - however, don't over use, for obvious reasons! also use a rubber/latex glove to protect your hand from drips.)
