There was an item on BBC news this morning about the number of �1 coins that are fakes.

If you have a "fake" �1 coin it only become a fake when a shop refuses to take it?
As with any forgery it only becomes worthless when it is not accepted.

And it is illegal to offer it to a shop if you believe it is a fake.

A fake pound coin usually feels different in your hand and if you scratch it with another coin, the surface will come away, exposing shiny metal underneath. If you try to do this to a genuine pound coin, that won't happen.

Thats how we used to spot fake ones when I worked in a shop years ago, so unless they are made differently, thats a way of telling if you are not sure.
