yes, the original was started by me a while back, in my post 6 on this one I've linked into the other one, to let people know what had already been said
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

The places I know are mainly commercial premises that have been converted from houses and still have a garden attached, but don't want them. The patch I have, the flat was given to the woman's son in his 20s, he doesn't do gardening ("too many random things" - ah well, each to his own) and they were desperate for anybody who would tidy it up so that the neighbours on the adjoining gardens, with no fenceline, wouldn't complain. Fool that I was, I turned down their offer of money to actually grow my veggies there ! They keep on asking me to turn their poached-egg infested chuckies into more growing ground ! It's only half a standard plot at most (which seems to be a typical size for scrap ground, the size of an old drying green) and the ground was ready to plant once the shrubs were gone, so it hasn't been a massive effort.
At the end of the day, sometimes you will be lucky, sometimes not. But with the local council around here charging £70 for a waterless allotment plot, damn near everything looks better.
There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.

I've merged the 2 threads, so it's a bit less confusing
