  • It's a girl !

We've been trying for a year, and finally we've been blessed.

Our little bundle of joy arrived late last night, all tired & cuddly (but this morning has properly woken up and is trying to destroy the laptop)

Oh how gorgeous - I love African Greys! Is she a hand-reared bird - she certainly looks comfy enough with human contact. You must keep us posted of her progress (lap-top- destruction and all!)

She is hand-reared, yes. 11 weeks old, so perfect for rehabilitation, I mean training.

Her parents are pets who apparently just can't stop having babies (they aren't easy to breed)

I am trying not to spoil her, aunty Flum, but she is so cute, gurgling and cooing just like a human baby. She's into tasting everything at the moment, to find out what breaks, what tastes nice, and what shouts "OW"

She's lovely TwoSheds, we have a friend with an African Grey and he terrorises her 5 dogs!

        Does she have a name?

Not yet, I think a name will become clear once we've known her for a few days.

At the moment "NO" is a likely candidate.

I had a Sun conure, he was hand reared, such a lovely bird, now sadly he is in birdy heaven, now i have a cacariki, again amusing to watch but unfortunatly not hand happy. We kinda rescued him from a pet shop. He was in an avairy but the other birds kept attacking him, so he was moved into smaller cage on his own at the back of the shop, he looked depressed and sorry for himself, so i bought him.

Now he has pride of place in the sitting room, so always has company, and bounces from perch to perch, singing and also does acrobatics!! Bathtime is very very amusing to watch, doesn't talk but tries to communicate by a very strange singing. Oh and loves a good arguement with the hoover!!!

that's how I got my Conure. He'd been poked and prodded in the pet shop, and was really vicious (still is, with everyone but me).
I spent a fortnight getting savaged before he accepted that I wasn't giving up, and now he's good as gold (with me).

the Grey has been "testing" me this morning ... I've got one bloody finger so far. It's important not to flinch or make a loud noise, as this eggs them on to bite - it's good entertainment . Instead, a firm NO, and a tap on the beak.

If the biting persists ... it's back into the cage and ignored (naughty step).

The conure was hand happy, its the cacariki thats not. Sunny ( the conure ) would sit for hours on the shoulders and gave kisses. Getting him back into the cage was difficult, he hated being in there!! he'd sit right in the middle of the shoulder blades, just down the back in that spot that u can't quite reach!!! Stupid is something that bird was not! lol
He was very good with commands " step up " and understood "no" but liked to ignore the latter!! slepy under a sheet of newspaper too, which was strange. Oh i miss that bird.
