The reason Diesel is more expensive is that is actually is more expensive to produce. In a given amount of crude, you get about one half the amount of diesel compared to petrol. The reason it used to be cheaper is that it attracted a lower rate of tax at one time.
Not only that but the uk is a net importer of deisel - we don't make enough for ourselves. Deisel is currently £1.06 per litre up here.

Diesel is more expensice now due to a change in Duty policy. Because Diesel is more poluting that petrol...they have added more duty to it. It is all to do with the amount of Sulpher and soot it produces.

Road tax is just a general tax - it doesn't pay for maintenance, and it doesn't entitle car drivers to exclusive use of the roads either *
Which is why it's called Vehicle Licence, not road tax. Really gets up my nose when people say horse riders should pay tax. We do, through the rip-off passport scheme. Neither payment goes to upkeep of the roads - council tax does, which is why the condition of the roads varies so much between counties. No wonder there are so many 4WDs in Surrey...

OH did experiment last year with putting cooking oil into his L200, but then the supermarkets cottoned on and raised that, too. Surprise!

Apparently our Tdi (Naomi) could run on cooking oil mix but my Denzel (latest Defender) can't Anyway I think Biofuel will be a bad way to go as its production is less green than the government makes out, and will mean food shortages......

And don't get me started on the government, the economy, the budget, or 'elf 'n safety, I've been very very restrained....... *breathe in, breathe out.........

But if you cooking oil that has alredy been used (chip shops) it is great. Saves the oil being poured down the drains or being burried in land fill.

Is that as opposed to all the governments we've had since the introduction of the internal combustion engine ?
