What is going on with petrol price's apart from going up they are getting closer to diesel price's .
Diesel is now only 6p dearer than petrol i paid 93.9p for petrol today and diesel was 99.9 at the same place in Bedworth .
Not long ago Diesel was 10p or 11p dearer than petrol now they are getting closer together .
I bet Jennie is still paying through the nose up there in Shetland .

Those poor struggling oil companies have to make their margin somewhere.

(The petrol round here is normally cheaper but I paid £1 / L for super yesterday)

And then condone congestion charges and thinking about extra road levies on busy roads! Dartford crossing's debt was paid off a couple of years ago and the toll was supposed to be scrapped, but was decided to keep, 6 month's ago up by 50% for something that should not even still be there!

sorry for the thread shift.... Diesel always used to be cheaper where I come from as it's cheaper to make..... however as Diesel's popularity rose so too did the price....

This Government raises £23.7 billion in fuel tax (facts from the AA web site), I think raising money by tax on fuel tax, is better than putting it on income tax, or NI.
A new study claims that public debt is a massive £1.3 trillion, equivalent to £53,000 for every household in the UK. How should the government plug this debt? Income tax, National Insurance?
The answer is - Jet fuel used for international aviation attracts no duty, and no VAT.

Road tax is just a general tax - it doesn't pay for maintenance, and it doesn't entitle car drivers to exclusive use of the roads either *

Hmmmm...interesting.

The reason Diesel is more expensive is that is actually is more expensive to produce. In a given amount of crude, you get about one half the amount of diesel compared to petrol. The reason it used to be cheaper is that it attracted a lower rate of tax at one time.

I think the recent prices rises are the increase in fuel duty more than greedy oil companies. As mentioned before, the Government takes more in duty that the oil companies make, bearing in mind the Government does nothing at all for that income.

As far as increasing tax on other things, such as Aviation fuel, one has to consider (the slightly contraversial view) that running an airline is an expensive business. If the price of fuel increased dramatically, I think more airlines would go bust due to fewer travellers, creating more unemployment etc.

So what makes sense from a driving perspective? Possibly abolish road tax and charge for road usage on a per-mile basis. I believe that is what happens in France now, although it is only the motorways that have tolls (although expensive). The other option is to raise fuel duty and have no other charges for car use, so the more you use the car, the more you pay. Of course, the Government doesn't really want us to stop driving, drinking or smoking as the loss of revenue would be too significant and difficult to make up elsewhere.

Tax anything and it will be used less, should people that rarely fly subsidise business people and frequent flyers?

I dont know which it was petrol or diesel but the local Tesco had something priced at £1.03.09p me and my daughter saw it as we passed the garage and we were laughing cos I said £1 and thrupence !!!!
