Why is it always the4 poorer people that this sort of thing starts with , If I remember correctly the bird flu started the same way is it because those epople have to live in the same building as their livestock ?

Yes, this is why we get flu epidemics. The flu virus sweeps over from Asia where people live in close proximity to animals and the flu viruses get mixed up. In Mexico it seems a pig farm was nearby.
Very basically the flu virus lives in Humans, birds and pigs, when those three species live in close proximity, as in the Far East, then there's a greater possibility that two 'flu strains can end up in the same person/animal at which point the constituents parts can be 'reshuffled' to produce a third strain. No mutation is necessary, just the right conditions. Think of it more like cross-breeding than mutating. There's absolutely no reason why it couldn't happen here, but because the poor of the world, and especially Asia, tend to live actually with their livestock (as it's the most precious commodity they own) then flu epidemics tend to originate there simply because conditions are more conducive.
What I don't understand is why people in Mexico have died but those who have developed symptoms in other countries seem to be responding to treatment.
Probably numbers, exactly how many hundreds of thousands of people in Mexico have had the "mild" flu and have been carrying on as per usual over the last few weeks. If the virus becomes more established in new places for a longer time, expect some fatalities per 100000 sufferers as per seasonal flu - eg. 20 million pop Mexico City!!.
On the bright side this is not looking anything like "Captain Tripps" from The Stand by Mr King
Jiving on down to the beach to see the blue and the gray, seems to be all and it's rosy-it's a beautiful day!
There is a child quite near us who has been diagnosed with having swine flu, she was on the same plane as the couple from scotland coming back from mexico. Whilst at the hairdressers yesterday one of my daughters friends walked past, daughter rushed out side to say hello and to tell her one of their friends that went to the same primary school was in the hairdressers and to come and say hello, the girl would not cross the road and had her hand over her mouth saying no cos of swine flu, this is totaly wrong she has been nowhere near mexico or anyone else that has been in contact.
If she was my daughter she would be told off for behaving in such a way, I will be very surprised if she is even in school today.

A teacher and pupil at my grandson's school in Paignton have been diagnosed with swine-flu and the school has been closed.
I am vaguely worried about this but given the health and vigour of most children I'm sure they will recover. I would worry about weak and poorly people though.

Please read earlier posts in this thread that I posted, pandemic flu affects the healthy ones, seasonal flu affects the young and elderly. The good thing about this virus is that it seems to be producing mild symptoms and can be treated with anti-virals.

I don't think the experts understand it either. It's the big mystery of the pandemic.
Personally, I'm quite looking forward to getting it: a week off work, and an excuse to laze around doing bugger-all? Great!
