Eastleigh Allotments are threatened with closure by the council as it wants to build 430 houses, & they have threatened to go to the High court.as it will mean the loss of 65% of the allotments in Eastleigh.
Apparently there are 300,000 allotments in cultivation in this country & the highest "population" is COunty DurhamLast edited by nick the grief; 20-10-2006, 12:29 PM.

They didnt say.
It was treated as a bit of a light hearted item concentrating on the fact that they weren't measured in metres till they interviewed on of their collegues who turned out to be a plotter.
The Councill bless them, said that the allotment people were holding the homeless to ransom - Boll**** are they (sorry LJ) the council got permission from the relevant government department but they didn't say it was well supported & as this is a designated allotment site it can only be disposed of if it's unused I think. Apparently, the allotmenteers refused alteranatives like sites on slopes, next to main road, thin sandy soil & non organing sites - if they have these to hand why can't this be used instead for building 400+ homes

This has been ongoing for a while and most of the plots on the site are well used. They had a petition at a local homes and gardens show as well here in southampton. I agree nick if other sites are available why must Eastleigh Council insist on the allotment site. As for holding the homeless to ransom, there are plenty of vacant properties in southampton and surrounding towns that could be converted to flats etc but obviously noone wants to because there is no money to be made. Then there's the whole Section 106 thing and deals with the council. The housing association site near the hospital still has vacant homes on it.
Nuff said really. I've even seen keyworker flats that are still standing empty and unsold/rented two to three years after they have been built.Bright Blessings
