  • For serious vegtable eaters.

And before anyone jumps on me I do mean people who are dedicated to the consumption of vegetables, not those without humour, nor vegtables which are not light hearted.
Just heard an item about the recommended consumption of 5 portions of veg and fruit per day. My immediate reaction was "ONLY 5?" Counted up, yesterday we had 16 different ones. I bet that the majority of you good folks who grow their own food would be just as likely to eat that many too.
So are you a serious vegtable eater?

PS. Our grandchildren visited and ate with evident pleasure all the different vegetables which were on offer too!

We'd struggle with five veg Palustris as there are only a few vaireties we like as a family, so I grow loads of them

I can only manage 3 different sorts of fruit a day as well but I do get through quite a bit of that too so what we loose in variety we make up for in quantity.

As to serious, well I'm not serious for long about anything - lifes too short to be serious.

Hi P! Actually, yes I've eaten more veg since growing my own - I'm very naughty though I don't eat enough fruit - or salad stuff. Must do better methinks! DDL

        The Present

Imagine there is a Bank that credits your account every morning with $86,400.

However, it carries over no balance from day to day and every night the bank deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day.

What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course!

Each of us has such a bank. Its name is TIME.

Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance and it allows no overdraft.

Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours.

There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow." You must live in the present solely on today's deposits. So invest it wisely each day to get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and success!

The clock is running. Make the most of today.

To realise the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed the HSC.

To realise the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby.

To realise the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper.

To realise the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.

To realise the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed the train.

To realise the value of ONE-SECOND, ask a person who just avoided an accident.

To realise the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person who won a medal in the Olympics.

Treasure every moment that you have! And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time.

And remember that TIME waits for no one.

Friends are very rare jewels indeed.

They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their heart to us.

Show your friends how much you care. Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND. If it comes back to you from someone else, then you'll know you have a CIRCLE OF FRIENDS.

        Yesterday, is history.
        Tomorrow, is a mystery.

We've all eaten more veg and more variety since we have had the lottie. Miss E is more inclined to eat veggies too. It also helps with rabbit treats (carrot tops etc.). I must admit it tastes better, the budget is lower and we get some exercise. Still could do better though. Ate lots of fruit in the summer especially plums and blackberries. I think I've got to the stage of "if we don't grow it I'll be damned if I'm making a special trip to buy it."

Snadger - you've just cheered me up - I was feeling pretty down in the dumps today and you've made me remember that life's just too short to worry

Well done snadger, Now i know why I couldn't remember who it was

Life certainly is short. As one or two of you know, there is a girl who works with me got married last year, they had a baby around Christmas & her husband collapsed & died about 2 months ago aged 27 Ask Sarah about the importance of using your time to full advantage.

Sorry to be all serious but I have my moments.

I'm with you Palustrus. I love to have loads of fruit, vegetables and salad and think - what only 5 a day. But for anybody struggling with it take this tip. Every morning for every body in the house I lay out
                    a glass of fruit juice
                    3 dried apricots
                    1 tablespoon of raisins
1 piece of fruit or about 6 grapes
Voila ! 4 of your 5 a day and it's not even breakfast time.

And thank you Snadger. Yes time is precious as anyone who has had a near death experience or nearly lost a loved one knows. This is not a dress rehearsal. It's your life.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

That's a brilliant quote, where did you find it.

Kind of makes you realise once again that this is no rehearsal it's for real and you have to make the best of what you've got..

It's all too easy to forget that you only get one life. I.m sometimes guilty of spending too much time at work. Later I question.... where did that get me exactly? How did that help make my life more exciting or fulfilling? It didn't....

While looking at photographs from a few years ago when backpacking in Australia, it made me realise that recently I've not been using my time properly and that back then.... I really understood the value of time and what to do with it.

Sometimes you need a reality check to make you appreciate things. I had my photos yesterday, and Nick and Snadger today.... so here's to appreciating life more!!

Oh yes.... and eating lots of veggies. Nobody wants to be constipated while enjoying all that life has to offer

I really like my job and the time I spend working is worthwhile. I work in conservation and at the moment we are felling trees off blanket bog, a habitat of international importance - it's as rare as many types of tropical rainforest and the goverment in their wisdom tried to plant trees on it in the 1980s, wrecking large parts of the ecosystem. It's sometimes a bit strange to be a conservationist who's chopping down trees, but it's all about the right thing in the right place - the blanket bogs up here have been naturally tree-less for 4000 years and want to be bogs, not non-native conifer plantations. So every day I am putting right the environmental worngs of the past! That gives me a warm glow, even on a cold chilly damp autumnal day like today. But I know I'm lucky to be doing this, not everyone gets the chance.

yes, only 5 seems puny but this is a MINIMUM requirement, in austrailia the gov. recomends 8, think our gov are just trying to get most of the population back up to 5 so they dont scare the ones eating none.
as to getting more fruit in your day, just make fresh smoothies for bfast every day, i find it very hard to get OH to eat 1 peice of fruit with his lunch, but he adores his smoothie in the morning.
