Allotment Woes

I'm feeling blue today, I've been foolishly playing football and gone and broken my leg. At the most active time in the calendar I'm laid up.

Doc says I'm gonna be out of action for about 5 months all told, should I speak to the secretary and tell him my situation?

Ouch! That must have hurt! Sorry to hear of your sporting injury, but if you will go playing these dangerous games...(say's she who regularly risks life, limb and handbag on a horse!)
Yeah, speak to whoever you need to and get the word out to the other lottie owners that you are laid up. I'm sure they will rally round and help keep things under control - at least till you're able to get about on crutches.

5 months! That's some break you've got there - are you trying to compete with Sarz for the 'worst leg injury' award?

You are definately going to have to let the secretary know, you can't rush things like this, you've got to let it heal properly. When I broke my foot in July 07, the worst damage was actually to my ligaments, and they do take months and months to get better (I still get twinges now). You'll need plenty of physio too, don't try to be all manly and pretend you don't really need it - you will.

Hope you've got some help for the lottie too. I left my OH in charge, and a week later he got appendicitis!! Anything to get out of some hard work!!

I'd deffo speak to the secretary and perhaps see if you can get a friend or somebody to keep on top of it while you're out of action, maybe they could get reward by sharing the produce so that you still get something.

Re the break - which bones have you broken? I smashed my ankle in a car crash and was non load bearing for 8 weeks but then hobbling around OK and on another occaision broke the top off my tibia but that was much easier as I was put in a walking plaster so pretty mobile after a couple of weeks. Both of these involved ops to put in metal and at least a week in hospital. Is the 5 months the time it will take to get back to playing sports, if so then you'll be pottering around long before then.

Leg is what is technically termed as burgered. I have a plate holding the bones together (ankle to knee) and a couple of lovely bolts holding the foot onto the bottom of me leg. I was daftly turning to shoot at goal dislocated my kneecap and collapsed in a heap on top of my leg. At my age I should know better!!

Oh Mikey Sounds as messy as mine is (broken in 5 places altogether and held together with plates, screws and pins), big, big hugs from me, honey.

Definitely write and inform the secretary, you're much less likely to get any grief if they know the situation.

I've discovered that I can sow all my seeds into modules instead of direct sowing, I can plant stuff from a sitting position (leaning over the side of a chair), I can hoe from a chair, and I can even use a fork from a chair too. (Just make sure it's a good sturdy chair ). The stuff I struggle with is mainly carrying things like the watering can and trays of plants.

Hope you work out how to get some stuff done, the frustration is unbelieveable at times.

I've had metal in my elbow, it had to be pretty much bundled together as it was in marble sized pieces....a bad break...it's not fun at the best of times - they couldn't get it all out so I still set off various detectors every now and then. But the legs are obviously more crucial to mobility.

Keep taking the pain killers...

You are all so kind, I've just emailed our secretary to let him know, and asked him if he could ask my neighbour to help with the paths. I so wish I was out and about, there was a fair bit down, and my dad has visited recently and covered the areas which will not get planted this year.

Mobility is gonna be difficult for a while as the slightest touch or change of direction and my knee pops out. I daren't ask my wife to do anymore as she has enough problems with me and our little un without me putting further demands on her.

Ooh that sounds painful! Hope you can be more mobile sooner than 5 months. Failing that, you could always try lying down to do the gardening? Perhaps someone can stretcher you to the lottie, loL!

You can join my cat on his sickbed - his knee is in a very similar way. Let me know your physio moves and I'll do them on him.

Poor old devil! I always said sport was dangerous. I do feel for you though. It's the best time of the year for growing and so frustrating when you can't. I'm sure the allotment secretary is going to understand and not hassle you about it. I hope you've got loads of stuff in that looks after itself - spuds, JAs etc.? Keep taking the tablets, and when you feel up to it again, keep smiling! (It'll make people wonder what you're up to!)
