Is this the 'slow' time?

After 3 months of tidying up the garden and getting everything ready for the growing season, it seems like there's a real 'lull 'with not a lot to do apart from tidying up here and there and some weeding/watering.

We're quite far North, so a good bit behind those in the South - so, anyone else feeling the 'lull'?

Yep - enjoy it while it lasts. Time to put the kettle on and admire your tidiness before all the weeds explode again!!

yeah i know what you mean, i feel bereaved cos i've got nothing to do apart from stare at the veggies willing them to grow

Yes, know what you mean. I've planted my first lot of seeds and am waiting for the second lot to grow. As you say, weeding seems to be the main task at the moment. Not a problem, I like weeding...................says she, whos got lots and lots and lots of mares tail to get rid of on Saturday morning! I may change my mind.............

yeah i have nowt to do, all planted out, seedlings growing, i go up there twiddling my thumbs and waiting for the rain, it seems lately that whenever i go up there it starts to rain!

So what is everyone going to do 'gardenwise' in the meantime? I might paint my chiminea.

Going to paint two old fire buckets I got from the dump. Then I can sow some more carrots! Two birds one stone

I had the "lull" about a month ago ... but now everything is racing away, we haven't had proper rain for over a month, and the ground is too hard to plant any of my 50,000 seedlings into.
But I need the greenhouses for French Beans and squashes, so everything else will have to be planted out this weekend, or else.

I feel quite busy Amanda. Put the tomatoes, cucumbers , squash and all the other tender stuff outside and water them. Fuss about over them all day. Take them all back in for the night. Spend the day chanting the Mantra - start later next year. Nip head all day about what I am goung to do with it all so that I can go a holiday at the end of the month. Put the fleece on the tender stuff and take it off.
I think I would have an easier life if I just adopted a couple of delinquents.

Luckily, my lull was whilst I was away - I sowed loads of stuff gave it a really good water and trotted off....and came back to lots of seedlings that have needed the attention ever since. I tend to sow little and often; year round - so only really november is a completely dead month as come christmas I'm sowing onions again for the next year. So, that's 7 weeks in the year when things aren't being sown and looked after.

No lull at all here, just not enough hours in the day. Although suppose part of that is due to me trying to tame areas of the plot (first full year) at the same time as keeping on top of the weeds (can hear them as they grow!) and planting up new stuff, potting on like mad and sowing more tender stuff for the summer as well as hardy stuff for next winter.

What's a lull ???????
Every day Mon - Sun - a.m - open tunnel and water, p.m water, close tunnel
Monday & Tuesday - work in estate garden
Wednesday - work at either my own place or one of the walled gardens that I have veg in.
Thursday - Box day - gather, collect, cut, dig up and pick veg, make up boxes.
Friday - deliver boxes all day
Saturday - Farmers Markets or work at my own place
Sunday - work at my own place or one of the two walled gardens.

In between - keep up with paperwork, juggle finances, paint bedrooms, make chutney, pickles, jams, marmalades, play with kids, work as a doorman (bouncer to you and me) - sometimes I even sleep.

It's not just me then! I swear I can hear the chickweed sniggering as soon as I turn round to weed the next bed

It's our first year on this plot, and although it's much easier than the last one (only a bit of couch grass and a few dandelions on the perennial weed front) there's been a fair bit of sorting out to do. As of Tuesday we no longer have the peculiar derelict coldframe/storage thingy and I now have 2 lovely compost bins instead And then I remembered I was going to pot on the squashes etc, so I had to do that when I got home. What was I doing with my time before I got an allotment?
