  • The Sweetpea - Kitten Progress Report

The Sweetpea made it through her first night! She's now 26 hours old.

We've had a good night. The Sweetpea spent her night under my chin. I haven't slept too badly, but was very conscious of her tiny presence.

Since 11.30 last night the Sweetpea has had four good feeds of kitten formula at half strength, and it's getting easier to fed her with the syringe & teat. It was a bit trial & error at first and I was quite scared in case the milk went down the wrong way.

She's also toiletted (both ways) which, as any parent knows, is a relief. That was a terrible pun and quite unintended.

She's asleep in a chinese food container lined with double-sided fleece on the radiator just now. I have to feed her again in an hour.

The daughter is bringing home a little incubator this evening so that we can regulate her body temperature better and she has somewhere much safer to live. I'm wearing a tatty old tshirt today and we'll use it to line the incubator later as the Sweetpea is fixated on my scent.

The other cats are all fascinated with her, although her mother and gran have decided they aren't interested any more.

Need to charge my camera so I'll get some pics later today. I'm elated that she's made it this far after all she's been through

Well done...you should give yourself a big hug- you've done really well!!!

Have to say I was thinking about her - (and your crazy day!!!)in the middle of the night

Piccies would be wonderful ( preferably of her on the radiator rather than in your bra!!!)

        fingers crossed for another day!

              Awww....

....it would be like giving one of my kids away if the Sweetpea makes it through and I don't keep her.

I was reading about the problems with rearing prem kittens last night. Frightened the bejesus out of myself, so turned the 'puter off. They can become fixated solely on the rearer and be antisocial and nasty towards other people in the home, but we have plenty of cats and people, so I think we can socialise her properly.

Got to get there yet though.

So far, although I'm yawning, it's going quite well. I don't mind getting up at nights, rather that than the alternative. If all I have to give up is a wee bit of sleep - at present 20 mins every two hours - then it's a small price to pay.

Nicos, what are you saying about my underwear?

I'll get a pic of Sweetpea next to our 4 wk old kittens if I can. The difference is huge.

Izzy is fine. She was sleeping by the bathroom radiator earlier and I was watching her tummy wriggle, so the unborn baby or babies are still alive. I only hope if she carries these to term that she doesn't reject them/it. I suppose if she does I'll have got the practice in on the Sweetpea!

Way to go, girl. That kitten must be a tough little beast to have made it this far!
Any chance that you could introduce her back to her mum when Izzy gives birth? Sort of sneak her up to the "milk bar" while Mum's distracted with a bit of tuna or something?

It might work Creem. We're certainly going to try if all goes well.

Sweetpea has just has 0.3ml of glucose solution. When I fed her yesterday I got two syringefuls into her (2mls) which is the recommended dose, but it's been half or one syringeful today. I think she needs an energy boost and one of the websites suggested in an early thread has said that glucose solution can be a life saver. I'll try getting as much milk into her as she'll take interspersed with glucose solution this evening. We'll see how that goes.

She weighs 56g today. I didn't weigh her yesterday so I'll use that as a guide from now on.

She's passed the meconium stuff, and had a proper poo, and she's weeing well so I think we're doing something right.

Thank you all very much for your lovely words of support, I really do appreciate them.
