my washing machine stinks

My kitchen always has this mouldy smell.

I've checked the usual suspects (compost bucket: empty); fridge (nothing rotting) and narrowed it down to the washing machine.

I've pulled it out and checked for leaks - nothing. The wall behind it had black mould, but I think we inherited that. Anyway, I bleached it all off.

I've cleaned out the rubber seal round the door.

It still stinks.

I've done some very hot (90C) washes, and bleached the powder drawer.

It still stinks.

Can you clean out the filter? That's the compost bucket equivalent in the machine...

Mine went through phases of doing that (and it was less than a year old), OH disconnected a pipe that according to their helpline was optional... no smells since.

Hope you get it sorted. Maybe it isn't draining properly? and there is therefore water left somewhere you can't see.

as above or perhaps there's a small leak and the water is pooling inside the body of the machine...

Filter may be clogged, is your man handy enough to take the back off and have a look?

If mine gets a bit niffy, I chuck in some sterilising tablets and run a boil wash on the empty machine. (not very green I know, but only needs doing occasionally)

Do you close the door in between washes or leave it open? Mr Z closes it and I have to open it again.

We found at a previous house that the water out pipe allowed water to sit in a dip and it always smelled. The plumbing in needed redoing.

I just did.
A pint of water went all over the floor, but no blockages, and no mould.

He's handy enough to walk in and say " the kitchen effing stinks" and that's about it.

Yup. And I wipe out the puddle that collects inside the rubber door seal.

Have a good look inside the draw where you put the powder. Mine was getting quite wiffy last year and i managed to pull the draw out, it was dripping with mould in all the little nooks and crannies, especially in the upper side of the machine, this is where the powder sticks when its blasted with the incoming water.

After plenty of scrubbing and cleaning as much as i could i have now reverted to liquid and the small has never returned.

I have done ... it's clean !
(the drawer doesn't come out, but I've bleached it all, and done the sniff test - the smell isn't coming from the powder drawer).

I've just Googled Washing Machine smells... you should have seen the results... you need to identifiy which smell you have and follow advice..

egg smells
Musty smell...etc....

yes, Google gave me too many choices (mostly about having to do a boil wash, which I have done already)
It's definitely a .... manky smell.


I'll do a boil wash with soda crystals next, then one with white vinegar.
