There are some decent villages to the East, in reach of the M4. All depends where in Bristol you need to go (all of it is a bit of a swine for rush-hour traffic, judging by the few times we've tried!). If you can tollerate being in hearing of the actual motorway, you get more house-and-garden for your money, in what are otherwise nice areas.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

There is loads of countryside but houses can be expensive, as previously said rush hour traffic is a nightmare so somewhere close to the motorway or avon ring road would help. There are some really bad areas - just like all cities, as long as you stay away from these you'll be fine! I live on the outskirts of Bristol in the country and i love it feel free to PM me if you'd like to know anything else or anything about a particular area

I was born and bred in Bath - Gorgeous, gorgeous place, unfortunatly I can't afford to live there! But Wiltshire is lovely!
There are lots of great places to live in commutable distance of bristol that are rural/semi-rural.
Imagination is everything, it is a preview of what is to become.

          Hi STG,

If its a garden you're after - you'll have to steer clear of central Bristol - we headed to the outskirts.... Westbury-on-Trym, about 5 miles from the centre, before we found anywhere with a decent garden.

Bristol is however an utterly wonderful place to be - it's got a nice 'green' feel about - allotments are very popular here, as is the 'Good life' way of life..

Its got all the benefits of a proper city, but if you head out just a few miles you hit proper countryside, and dramatic scenery so you never feel hemmed in. We also find Westcountry folk to be warm and welcoming - but we did move here from London!

The vast majority of people who live here will heartily and proudly recommend Bristol and the Westcountry as a nice place to live.
There are hundreds of little villages all around Bristol that will be ideal if you don't fancy being too close to the city.

Don't worry about crime - it only really happens in the more central areas on friday/saturday night. Oh and don't be tempted by cheap houses in Southmead, Knowle West, or St. Pauls....

Come over and say hello - I'll show what you an allotment should look like when its about a month behind schedule!!

Week ago last Friday we drove to the Gower. I'm now seriously addicted and want to move across the channel to Wales. It is so green! The only eyesore was Port Talbot steel works & refinery, but even if you turned to look inland from there, it was beautiful. I also have this thing about male voice choirs..........

Shirl, we live 20 miles south of Bristol. Try looking at Yatton, Congresbury, Backwell, Nailsea, Tickenham...they're all rural but just minutes away from Bristol. We live just outside Weston super Mare - don't go there it's grotty.

Only, you'd get the worst deal....this house is a nightmare. OH's uncle is our landlord, and he doesn't seem to think he has any landlordly responsibilities because we're family. There have been big barnies I can tell you!

Well, Madmax started his new job on Monday. The Orange offices where he is based are just off the M5 (first exit after the M4 if that makes sense). I am not sure what the area is known as but it is the same place as the RAC offices.

It remains to be seen whether we will move to Bristol (got to give the lad a chance to decide whether he enjoys the job after all) but it is always worth an investigate.

Madmax is going to be in and around York for the next two weeks I believe, any tips on anywhere he should put on his 'to visit' list?

Ooh I used to live in Bristol - went to uni there, got married there. Lovely place. I wanted to live there, but my parents moved there so we won't be going near the place now.

Nice areas..well, I suppose Coombe Dingle, Westbury on Trym way is nice. There are some lovely wooded walks and I suspect it's more affordable. Watch the Downs though, bit dangerous. Don't move to St Pauls or..well town centres are not great places to live anyway. Clifton is lovely - I lived there, but not exactly affordable (I was in halls) - lovely village feel to it though.

Hi Shirl, Bristol is great, I drive past orange every day, loads of choice some with countyside, we live in cardiff now and i work in Bath, we were thinking of going closer to town near newport or caldicot , countrywise you could easily go south, lovely areas around chew valley, yatton, etc, to give you an idea cardiff to orange (aztec) is around 40 mins (only the toll!)
would give Bedminster/st pauls/easton a miss as too central . on the outskirts clifton is very nice but expensive ! Good luck !

Thanks folks. Aztec is indeed where he is based, he was in Cardiff yesterday and today though. If we move, I want to be as close to Wales as possible for trips home to visit dad and stuff. Deffo have no intention whatever of living in 'town', I am much too much a country girl for that stuff.

I guess if he is working at Orange that is to the north of the city next to the M5/M4 interchange. There are lots of places with big garden spaces in Frenchay,Winterbourne,Frampton cotterell areas also Chipping sodbury. Bristol is a cracking place to live with a decent climate for growing and lots of green areas.

EDIT These places are all closer to Wales and Work, welcome to the beautiful City and County of Bristol.

Hi and thanks greengas. Right at this moment, he is watching Star Trek at the Vue cinema (wherever that may be). Not sure if we will be moving now as I don't really get the impression he enjoys the job - we shall wait and see.

I thank everyone for their input on this thread, it has been very useful and might well be more useful if it transpires that we do indeed move to Bristol.
