  • Just my luck!

We took our Japanese student to a boot fair this morning, to see 'English rubbish'. They bought a load of disney videos, ones DD had missed getting when she was younger. They are now munching on doughnuts and having a film fest.
They WERE going to help me in the 'allotment' garden, http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...den_32439.html, but its pouring down now, much to DD's delight . I can't go now even if it clears up, as I'm visiting Mum in hospital, but it's so annoying.
We got a bit cleared now, and I wanted to plant out some tomatoes, cabbage and celeriac. They've been hardening off in my garden, and have withstood the wind, so they should be fine in the 'allotment' garden, which being in town is much more sheltered.
Mind you it's been tough, the guy said no thistles or nettles, well he's got both, plus cleavers, dandelions and docks. That's besides the shrub roots that were concealed in the undergrowth. It's taking a lot longer than I thought, and I've got peas, beans and courgettes champing at the bit! We've started taking the weeds straight to the tip after each session, 4 bags last time, and we could only do 2 hours The bindweed roots look like white alien worms, so thick and convoluted.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
    Now a little Shrinking Violet.

Typical isn't it Barleysugar. I finally got debris netting this week and have hardened off my plants and am now desperate to get out in the garden and plant out and make covers and it won't stop raining! I went out yesterday in the drizzle and tried to ignore it (neighbours must have thought I was mad!) so it had to absolutely pour down, I ran for cover - it stopped - I went out again - it started again!! I think someone up there was laughing at me!!!!!!

There are 2 things which are on the 'last resort' list in my garden, slug pellets, and weedkiller. The little blue pellets got an outing yesterday, because of the number of slugs and snails I found while re-clearing the patches I cleared (or thought I had cleared) for planting several weeks ago. Only place I might use weedkiller this year is the ivy climbing in my bedroom window......
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Hilary, you have made me feel so much better, have been feeling guilty about using unmentionable pellets but have huge slug/snail problem round here. Neighbour has done midnight raids on them for last 8 years with torch but still suffers just as much. I just want my new veg plot to flourish and 'my babies' allowed to grow! Oh dear, think I might be getting too obsessed with said 'babies'.

I have had all my dill eaten by slugs and now something is having a go at my netted broccoli - it really is frustrating trying to keep our baby plants continue to grow!

I have raked the soil and planted the seeds
Now I've joined the army that fights the weeds.
