Hi All,

The weather here is going to be 30c today.
I let the chooks out in the run I made yesterdayy. I just made it from chicken wire and some tomatoe stakes, it will do for the time being. It is so funny watching them srutting around and having dust baths, I must have sat there for an hour yesterday just watching them

My tomatoe plants are about a foot high now and have some flowers on them too. The marrows (seeds sent from UK) are doing well too, they have a few flowers too. I have planted some lettuce seeds and some kale (for the chooks) no signs of life there yet

Hello Country Mouse, 30 degrees sounds fab! Here in Suffolk, England it's just starting to get cold. We've had a warmer than average summer, and right up till yesterday it was 17 or 18 degrees. Forecast is much cooler from here on in, but at least it's supposed to be dry and sunny. Hoping to get to the allotment this weekend.

Have you always lived in Australia, and how did you get to hear about the Grapevine? Sorry I'm just being nosy, tell me to butt out if you like. Do you grow flowers, or just veggies. Welcome to the vine, we're very nice but slightly nutty too.

Hi Rustylady,

I was born in UK, in Morecambe LAncashire. I came to Australia with my parents on the migrant scheme when I was 17 (many moons ago now)

I have grown veggies for years with different kinds of succes LOL

I have a country type garden in the front of the house, lavenders, different types of daisy bushes, sages, stocks, butterfly bushes, indian blanket flowers.

In the back garden I have a grapefruit tree and a cherry plum tree and a bottlebrush ( has red bottle brush type flowers) some flowers too, more daisy bushes (easy to grow from cuttings)

I have many pets, sort of minagere (sp) a dog Kym she isa red heeler a cattle dog, she came from the RSPCA dogs home when she was four months old, she is now 15. I have six cats, Lucy 15years, Asher 5years and Sandy, Misty,Smokey, CJ all one year old. I aslo have tow budgies and some goldfish in a pond out side.

How do the cats get on with the chooks?

I am babysitting my daughters three guinea pigs in a run on the lawn and the local cats seem absolutely fascinated by them. They don't seem to try to attack them at all, just sit watching them through the wire!

Sorry to seem so ignorant, but what is the climate like in Adelaide? Do you have proper winters and summers, or is it much the same all year round. What about rainfall? Here in UK it seems to have changed so much since I was a child, we used to have 4 distinct seasons, winter, spring, summer and autumn. Now they all seem to blur together.

I grew up in Devon, on the edge of the moors, and we had cold winters, cool springs, slightly warmer (occasionally hot) summers, and cool autumns. Moved to Suffolk nearly 30 years ago and we're supposed to have the sunniest and driest climate in UK, but the last few years have been strange. Not much frost in winter, dry springs and early summers, but torrential rain towards the end of summer and through into autumn. Wonder what this winter will bring?

No frost yet, but the temp is due to drop from 16 yesterday to 10 tomorrow (daytime) with nights due to go from around 10 to 3.

Hi country mouse, great to have your contributions and it'll be lovely to find out what veg growing is like for you out there. I grew up in the Channel Islands and moved to Southampton to start nurse training, almost a culture shock but not quite. The last few days have been lovely here but as with Suffolk it is now starting to get cold. I still have one courgette plant producing in the shelter of the back garden but the allotment is starting to look quite bare.

How much space do you have for your menagerie and veggies etc.?

I have a large garden (will measure it and let you know lol)

I only built the run yesterday and the cats just sat outside and watched the chooks. Today CJ (female cat) went in when I went in lol, I didnt see her behind me. I watched her to see what she would do. She just walked around, went up to the chooks (as if to say "what are you?" and they looked at her the same way She didnt chase them at all (thank goodness) The girls ( alass unamed as yet) had thier first full day in the run today, very busy they were too scratching and having dust baths.

I have dug another veggie bed too, not sure what I will put in there yet, will have a look at the garden centre tomorrow after I have been grocery shopping.

Hi Country mouse, nice to hear from someone in Oz. My half-sister lives in Sydney, she went out on assisted passage too after she left University when I was about 7, only seen her a few times since. Do you have problems with drought in your part of the world? My sister's brothers-in-law have a farm & are about to give up after years of drought, not sure which part of Oz they're in though.
