  • I want!!

My darling daughter has reached a new stage in her development, its the I want stage, the adverts are quite amusing, she watches them and its I want one of those. How do/did you deal with this in a sensitive way, without just saying you can't have it.

If she still wants one in a week then we'll talk about it. Remind me.

    They usually forget.

She has a memory like no other child I have come across, she remembers things said, and days out, and visitors, and promises like them are engraved on her scull. I've said you'll have to wait until christmas and ask Santa for it, it seems to pacify her, until she asks when is christmas.

We used to explain that they were 'fashion' toys and that the boys were better to play with their vintage games instead

Either that or plain simple truth, we can't afford it, save your pocket money.

In that case, count out her money and see if she has enough to buy it.

We must have done the right thing with our lad. I remember overhearing him and a school friend talking. The friend said he wanted one of those (whatever) he'd seen on the telly. "It says the're dead good!" "Course it does," said Young Flum "They tell you that 'cos they want you to buy it!" Yayy - parental brainwashing DOES work!

I believe my Mum's standard retort was 'I want, doesn't get'!

When we were little we weren't allowed to watch ITV.I always thought it was because my parents didn't think the programmes were suitable....years later I worked out it wasn't the programmes they had a problem with!
I'm honest with ours & just tell them we haven't got the pennies and if they really, really want it,then they can wait til either Birthday or Christmas & they'll appreciate it more for the wait!

Our DD has far more disposable cash than either my wife or I, mainly cos she helps mami empty my pockets before washing

Do your parents complain about how much your child, has, and did theirs before them. I wonder if it just a given.

Ha ha, I'm done with thw why? stage now, I don't envy you!
Unfortunately both of mine are going through the 'I want' still (4 and 10 years old) I see no sign of it ending. Instead of bedtime stories they both want to look at the Argos catalogue, grr!

Kids need to be told no they can't have things otherwise they turn into spoilt brats. If you always buy them what they want then they will develop no sense of value and, if some kids I know are anything to go by, not bother looking after the stuff they have as they'll get a new toy next week anyway.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
