Alligator has a bit to much bite for me

We get buffalo burgers from our farmers market.

They are farmed not far from here and are a strange site for the Yorkshire countryside.

The farm started farming them for the milk in the first instance. The milk is different to cows milk. Their son used have some kind of allergic reaction to cows milk but they found not to buffalo milk. They expanded to producing them for meet as it proved successful.

Dont know if you get them in the mainland but there is a variety of crisps called PERRI .They are made just North of Dublin at Ashbourne and the owners have a herd of buffalo (about 100 I think). They use some of them as flavouring in the crisps and sell stakes etc as well. Seem to remember it was about twice the price of beef.

I have to confess the main reason I go is a woman who sells the best sticky toffee pudding in the world. I'm not a great fan of sweets, but this is different. There's just no way I could produce that.
The buffalo farmer in Fife is planning his own Cheese(mozzerella) next year I saw the other day on the local news,or was it Landward, the farming/country program on a sunday morning,I digress. There are Emu's ,Llamas and Ostriches in the Angus/Perthshire region,we also have a wildboar farm in Perthshire, and as is common nowadays,a feral population of them too.I've eaten them all except Emu,can't say I'd eat any of them again though, wild boar was very bland to my taste, disapointing and I'd so looked forward to it as my Dad used to hunt them from his local forest as a lad.Make fair sausages though, and venison.

Not tried ostrich yet but we were v. disappointed with buffalo from here in Hants. Venison and Wildboar feature frequently in sausages etc. around here. Strange that!

There's an ostrich farm near Preston which we buy steaks and stir fry strips from when we see them at farmer's markets. Very nice although wasn't very imipressed with the sausages. Have kept away from some of the other exotic meats as we try to eat local and I haven't seen many croc / kangaroo farms round here.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

The ostrich farm near Preston is in Singleton near the barracks. We had ostrich sausages on Monday night - lovely!

The best part is when you drive past the farm in Spring, before the hedges grow too much, and you can just see the heads of the ostrich peeking over the hedges!

We also get wild boar from a place near Lancaster...they make great sausages
The local game butchers in Poulton also does pigeon, rabbit, pheasant etc, and has a game pie mix that you can buy instead of buying everything seperatrly - yum!

Is the wild boar place near Lancaster called Sillfield Farm? Have had some stuff off them via our home delivery system and it was very nice but always keen to learn of other outlets.

This thread is depressing me - I'm vegetarian (well nearly-still eat fish)!
I do like farmers' markets though, especially when you can taste what's on offer before you buy. My O.H. has tried some of the more exotic offerings such as ostrich out of curiosity & because he knows there's no chance of me cooking them for him!

Pity you live so far away,Montrose farmers market has a visit from the "Arbroath smokie" makers and they do them in a barrel on the side of the road, the smell is something else.

Burnie,I've tried Arbroath smokies when we've been in Scotland & do like them even though they repeat on me all day after! I don't like smoked salmon though unless it's hot smoked or honey roasted & anything smoked comes back on me so I have to suffer if I want it!

Been to a local exhibition in TELFORD today called 'homestyle' where alot of 'local' produce was availible to try and buy.I'm veggie to and there was someone selling different types of nut and veggie roasts. They were really tasty, only I'm kicking myself cos I've lost my leaflet with address for ordering My daughter spent a fortune on specialist sausages, burgers, jams and organic veg.(This is the daughter who was a nightmare as a child to get her to eat anything different or veggie!)It was really worth the visit.Free entry, free parking and lots of forms to fill in to win various items.Would def go if its on again next year! Was telling a lady who delivers boxed organic veg about 'gyo mag' and shes going to buy herself a copy to see what I was on about.
