Mars closest approach for 60,000 years happened in 2003 and it was not as big as the moon. This seems to be an urban myth that does the rounds every year.

Someone was careless with how they phrased it. They mentioned that "at a modest 75 times magnification Mars will appear as big as the moon seen with the naked eye", which was true enough (if read carefully), and for those in possession of a 75X telescope, a useful description. For the rest of us, decidedly misleading! (even if not intended). It is likely that someone then deliberately repeated the story, and it sort of grew from there with the aid of the half-informed....
